How ultraviolet disinfection systems treat household water

Ultraviolet disinfection systems pass water through a chamber lit by a UV lamp inside a quartz sleeve. The light damages the genetic material of bacteria, viruses and protozoa so they cannot reproduce, which makes them harmless. Nothing is added to the water, nothing is removed from it, and the whole method depends on the light actually reaching the organism.

Why UV suits private wells in particular

The EPA notes that private wells are not regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, that around 15 percent of the US population relies on one, and that a USGS study of 2,100 private wells found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human-health benchmark. Well owners who test positive for coliform have three practical options: shock chlorination, which is a one-off treatment, continuous chlorination with a contact tank and dechlorination, or ultraviolet. UV appeals because it adds no chemical, changes no taste, needs no contact tank, and treats continuously as long as it is powered.

Clear water first, or the lamp is decorative

UV works by line of sight. Anything that scatters or absorbs the light shields organisms behind it, so turbidity, sediment, tannins, iron, manganese and hardness are all enemies of a UV system. Sediment filtration ahead of the chamber is mandatory, usually staged from coarse to fine. Iron and manganese need removing because they both absorb UV and coat the quartz sleeve. Hardness scales the sleeve in exactly the way it scales a heating element. Every UV failure investigation ends in the same two places: an unmaintained pre-filter, or a fouled sleeve nobody has cleaned.

No residual, and what that implies for the plumbing

Chlorine leaves a residual that keeps working downstream. UV leaves nothing. Water is sterile at the outlet of the chamber and immediately vulnerable to anything living in the pipework beyond it. That means the whole downstream system should be disinfected when the UV goes in, that a unit should be positioned as close to the point of entry as the pre-treatment allows, and that any storage tank downstream is a place where regrowth can start. It also means a power outage stops treatment instantly, which is why alarms and shutoff solenoids exist.

Sizing, lamps and the maintenance that is not optional

Systems are sized by flow rate and by the transmittance of your water, and undersizing shows up as insufficient dose at peak demand rather than as any visible symptom. Lamps are replaced annually even though they still glow, because output falls well before the lamp dies and the visible light is not the germicidal wavelength. The quartz sleeve is cleaned on the same visit. Fit a system that has a lamp-out alarm at minimum, and preferably a solenoid that closes the line when the lamp fails, because a silent failure on a well with confirmed bacteria is the worst case here.

Where UV fits in the treatment train

UV goes last among whole-house stages: sediment, then iron and manganese removal, then softening if needed, then ultraviolet, then whatever point-of-use polishing you run for drinking water. It handles the microbiological problem and nothing else, so it does not address nitrate, arsenic, hardness, taste or dissolved metals. Do ultraviolet disinfection systems remove chemicals?

No. UV inactivates microorganisms and does nothing to nitrate, arsenic, lead, hardness or dissolved solids. It is one stage in a treatment train, not a general-purpose purifier.

How often does the UV lamp need changing?

Annually in most residential systems. Germicidal output declines long before the lamp stops glowing, so a lamp that still lights is not evidence that it is still disinfecting.
