An ultraviolet water filter is not really a filter. Water passes through a chamber around a UV lamp, and the light damages the DNA of bacteria, viruses and cysts so they cannot reproduce. Nothing is removed, nothing is added, and the water leaving looks exactly as it did going in, which is precisely why the rest of the system matters so much.
Inactivation, not removal
The lamp emits ultraviolet light at a germicidal wavelength, and the dose delivered depends on lamp output and how long each drop of water spends in the chamber. Adequate dose leaves the organisms intact but unable to divide, which is what makes water microbiologically safe. Because nothing is filtered out, an ultraviolet water filter has no effect on hardness, iron, sediment, nitrate, arsenic, chlorine, taste or smell. It is a disinfection step and only a disinfection step, and it is the right one when the problem is a positive bacteria test on a private well.
Prefiltration is not optional
UV only works on water the light can reach. Turbidity, sediment, tannins and iron all shade organisms from the lamp, and a particle can carry a bacterium through the chamber untouched. That is why a sediment prefilter is fitted ahead of every UV unit, and why hardness and iron often need treating first as well: both foul the quartz sleeve that separates the lamp from the water, and a coated sleeve cuts transmission without any warning that it has. This is the failure mode that puts unsafe water through a working lamp.
Sizing it to your flow
Dose falls as flow rises, because the water spends less time beside the lamp. A unit rated for a low flow installed on a house that draws two showers and a washing machine at once is delivering less than its rated dose exactly when it matters. Size the unit to the peak simultaneous demand of the house rather than to average use, and check the maker's rating at the level of ultraviolet transmittance your water actually has. Water with color or organics needs a larger unit than clear water at the same flow.
What maintenance really involves
Lamps lose output long before they stop lighting, so they are replaced on an annual schedule regardless of whether they still glow. The quartz sleeve is cleaned at the same time, gently, because scale and iron films on it are invisible from outside. Sensors and alarms on better units read transmitted light and warn when the dose falls, and they are worth having. There is no residual disinfectant after a UV unit, so any recontamination downstream, from a leaking joint or a plumbing repair, is not protected against.
Where UV belongs in a well system
Because the EPA does not regulate private wells under the Safe Drinking Water Act, a well owner deciding to disinfect is making the whole design decision themselves. UV goes last in the train, after sediment, iron and softening, and immediately before the point of use so there is as little plumbing after it as possible. It needs uninterrupted power, so a power cut means the water going into the house was not treated and the system should be flushed when it returns. Questions people ask about ultraviolet water filter
Does a UV filter remove chlorine or improve taste?
No. It only inactivates microorganisms. Taste, odor and chlorine are carbon's job, and hardness, iron and sediment all need their own treatment stages.
How often do I change a UV lamp?
Annually for most household units, because output falls steadily even while the lamp still appears to be working. Clean the quartz sleeve at the same time.
Do I need to boil water if the power fails?
Water that passed through an unpowered UV unit was not disinfected. Flush the system when power returns, and treat any water drawn during the outage as untreated.
Can UV treat cloudy water?
Not reliably. Particles shield organisms from the light, so cloudy or high-iron water must be filtered clear before it reaches the chamber.
