A polyphosphate filter holds food-grade phosphate crystals or beads in a cartridge, dissolving a trace of them into the passing water. Those phosphates wrap themselves around calcium, magnesium and iron so the minerals stay in suspension instead of plating out as scale or stain. A polyphosphate cartridge drops into a standard filter housing, typically the last stage before the appliance it protects, with a sediment cartridge ahead of it so grit does not pack the media. Fit it after any carbon stage rather than before, since you want the phosphate to reach the appliance rather than the carbon. The crystals visibly shrink as they dissolve, so the replacement signal is simple: look at the sight through the housing and change it once the media has run low, since a nearly empty cartridge is dosing almost nothing while looking exactly like an installed filter.
