The first response to a positive result is usually to find and fix the cause: a cracked casing, a missing or damaged well cap, surface water reaching the annulus, or a septic system too close. Shock chlorination then disinfects the well and the plumbing, and a retest confirms it worked. That is a one time treatment. If the contamination returns, if the source cannot be eliminated, or if the well is shallow and known to be vulnerable, permanent disinfection is the answer, and ultraviolet is the usual residential choice because it needs no chemical storage, no contact tank and no filtration behind it to remove what was added.

Ultraviolet only reaches organisms the light can get to. Turbidity shades them, and dissolved iron, manganese, hardness and tannins either absorb the light or deposit a film on the quartz sleeve that blocks it within weeks. So a UV install is really a train: sediment filtration first, then iron or hardness treatment if the water calls for it, then the lamp as the final stage before the house. Manufacturers publish maximum levels their units tolerate for exactly these parameters. Installing a lamp on water outside those limits gives you a system with a glowing indicator and no reliable disinfection, which is worse than no system at all.
Living with a UV system
Size it on peak household flow, since the dose falls as the rate rises and an undersized unit fails quietly. The lamp is replaced annually because output decays long before it stops lighting, and the quartz sleeve is cleaned at the same visit. A sensor with an alarm, and better still a solenoid that shuts the water off if intensity falls or power is lost, turns a silent failure into an obvious one. After any plumbing work downstream of the lamp, disinfect that section, because ultraviolet leaves no residual to protect the pipe behind it. Retest for bacteria at least annually, and after any well work, to confirm the system is still doing its job.

Does UV work against viruses as well as bacteria?
