A chlorination system feeds a measured trickle of chlorine into the water line so bacteria are killed before the water reaches any tap. On a house it is three parts working together: a pump that injects, a tank that gives the chlorine time to work, and a carbon filter that takes the taste back out at the end.
The parts a chlorination system needs
A residential setup starts with a chemical feed pump and a solution tank holding diluted sodium hypochlorite. The pump is triggered by the well pump or by a flow switch, so it only doses when water is actually moving. From the injection point the water runs into a retention tank, which is simply a large vessel that holds the water long enough for the chlorine to act. After that comes an activated carbon filter to strip the chlorine and its taste before the water enters the house. Leave any of those three out and you get either untreated water or chlorinated water at the kitchen faucet.
Continuous chlorination is not shock chlorination
Shock chlorination is a one-time job: you pour a strong dose down the well casing, circulate it through every fixture, let it sit, then flush it out and retest. It clears a contamination event but does nothing about a source that keeps reseeding the well. Continuous chlorination is the permanent answer to a well that fails bacteria tests again and again, or one where iron bacteria keep coming back. If your test came back positive once after a flood or a pump repair, shock and retest first. If it comes back positive after a clean shock, that is when a feed pump earns its place.
Contact time is what actually does the work
Chlorine needs time in contact with the water to disinfect, which is why the retention tank matters more than the pump. Size it against the peak demand of the house, not the average: a shower and a washing machine running together can pull water through a small tank faster than the chlorine can work. Water chemistry changes the job too. Iron, manganese, tannins and sulfide all consume chlorine before it reaches the bacteria, so a well loaded with iron needs a stronger dose or a separate oxidizing filter ahead of it. That is why the dose is set from a test result rather than a rule of thumb.
Living with a chlorination system
The solution tank has to be refilled on a schedule, and household bleach loses strength on the shelf, so buy it fresh rather than in bulk. Check the injection check valve and the pump head periodically: hard water leaves scale on the injector fitting and a fouled check valve is the most common reason a system quietly stops dosing. Test for a chlorine residual at a far tap now and then to prove the system is still working, and retest for bacteria at least once a year. Where it sits against the rest of the treatment train
Chlorination goes early in the line, close to where the water enters the building, because everything downstream benefits from disinfected water and from iron that has been oxidized into a filterable form. The carbon filter that removes the chlorine goes after the retention tank. If you also run a softener, put it downstream of the carbon so the resin is not exposed to a chlorine residual, which shortens resin life. A UV lamp is the alternative for bacteria alone, but it needs clear water and treats nothing else, whereas chlorine also oxidizes iron and sulfide on the way through.
Questions people ask about chlorination system
Does a chlorination system need power and a drain?
It needs a power outlet for the feed pump, but no drain connection. The carbon filter downstream will need a drain if it is a backwashing tank type rather than a cartridge.
Will I taste chlorine at the tap?
Not if the carbon filter after the retention tank is sized correctly and its media is replaced on schedule. Taste breaking through is the usual first sign the carbon is exhausted.
Is a chlorination system needed on city water?
No. A community water system already disinfects and monitors the water it delivers. Chlorination is a well owner's tool, and city customers are usually trying to remove chlorine instead.
Can chlorination replace a bacteria test?
No. The system is only proof that chlorine is being injected. You still need periodic lab testing to show that the water leaving the treatment train is free of coliform bacteria.
