A well chlorination system is what an owner reaches for when the well itself needs disinfecting: after a positive coliform result, after flooding, or after any work that opened the casing to the outside world. The choice is between a one-off shock treatment of the whole well and distribution system, and permanent equipment that keeps dosing every day. Which you need depends on where the contamination is coming from.

Shock treatment: disinfecting the structure

Shock chlorination treats the well as a vessel. A strong chlorine solution is poured into the casing and circulated so it contacts the casing walls, the water column, the pump, the drop pipe, the pressure tank and every household line, then held for a period before being flushed out. The purpose is to kill bacteria living on those surfaces rather than to treat incoming groundwater. It is the correct response after installing a new pump, replacing a well cap, repairing a leak in the line, or any event where surface water or soil could have entered the well.

Doing it without wrecking equipment or the septic system

The details are what separate a successful shock from an expensive mistake. Bypass or remove any carbon filter, softener resin and ultraviolet lamp before dosing, since strong chlorine damages media and seals. Circulate the solution by running a hose back down the casing until you smell chlorine at the wellhead, then open each interior tap until chlorine reaches it and shut it off. Let it stand for the recommended contact period. When flushing, do not discharge the chlorinated water into a septic system in one rush, because it kills the bacterial process the septic tank depends on.

Retesting is the part people skip

Chlorine has to be completely gone before you take a bacteriological sample, or the residual disinfectant in the bottle sterilizes the sample and hands you a false clean result. Wait until no chlorine can be detected at the tap, then sample. Many local health departments want two consecutive clean results taken a period apart, because a single pass can reflect the temporary knockdown from the treatment rather than a genuinely sound well. When a shock is not enough

Shock chlorination fixes contamination that lives inside the well and plumbing. It cannot fix contamination that keeps arriving. If coliform returns within weeks or months, the water entering the well is the problem, and the honest sequence is to inspect before you dose again: a cracked or missing well cap, casing that terminates below grade so surface water pools around it, a failing casing seal, a nearby septic field, or a shallow well drawing water that never had a chance to filter through soil. Repeated shocking of an actively contaminated well is treating a symptom on a loop.

Permanent equipment as the alternative

Where the source cannot be fixed or contamination is chronic, the options are continuous chlorine injection with a retention tank and downstream filtration, or ultraviolet disinfection at the point where water enters the house. Ultraviolet is simpler to own, needs no chemicals, and demands clear pre-filtered water and an annual lamp change. Continuous chlorination handles cloudier water, iron bacteria and sulfur alongside disinfection, at the cost of a chemical routine. Neither substitutes for repairing a well that is physically open to contamination.

Questions people ask about well chlorination system

How long should chlorine stay in the well?

Long enough to contact every surface, which in practice means several hours at minimum and often overnight. Follow the guidance your local health department publishes, since the recommended contact period varies by jurisdiction and well type.

Can I drink the water during shock chlorination?

No. Use an alternative supply for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth and pet water until the well has been flushed and a clean bacteriological result has come back from the lab.

Why did coliform come back after chlorination?

Because something is still letting bacteria in. Check the well cap, the casing height above grade, the grouting seal and any nearby septic influence, since a well open to surface water will recontaminate no matter how well it was disinfected.

Does shock chlorination remove iron or sulfur smell?

Only temporarily. It kills iron and sulfur bacteria that generate slime and odor, but if the minerals or gas are in the groundwater itself the problem returns and needs a permanent oxidizing filter.
