Shocking a well means dosing the whole system with chlorine strong enough to disinfect the casing, the pump, the pressure tank and every line in the house, then flushing it back out. It is the standard response to a positive coliform test and to work that opened the well. It is also, very often, a temporary fix applied to a permanent problem, which is the part people find out a month later.
What the job involves
The sequence is settled and skipping steps is what makes results unreliable. Bypass or protect anything the chlorine must not reach, including carbon filters, softener resin, ultraviolet lamps and reverse osmosis membranes. Introduce the chlorine solution into the well and circulate it back down the casing with a hose so the walls above the water line are wetted. Then draw the treated water through every fixture in the house, hot and cold, until each smells of chlorine, and close them. Leave the whole system standing for the contact time the guidance calls for, typically overnight, before flushing.
Flushing out, and testing at the right moment
Run the water to a safe discharge point until the chlorine smell is gone, and be deliberate about where it goes: a strong dose will damage a septic system's biology, and will kill vegetation and fish if it reaches a ditch or pond. Do not run it through the septic tank if a hose to an unplanted area is possible. Once the smell has cleared, wait before you sample. Testing immediately after flushing measures the chlorine, not the well. Retest after normal use resumes, and retest again some weeks later, because a well that fails the second test never really passed the first.
Why bacteria come back
Chlorine kills what it touches; it does not fix how the organisms got in. Recurrent positives point at a physical defect: a cracked or short casing, a missing or damaged sanitary well cap, a well pit that floods, surface water tracking down the outside of the casing, or a septic field too close or too high. Iron bacteria form slime that shields organisms from the dose and regrow from whatever survives. If a shock holds for weeks and then fails, stop repeating it and go looking for the entry route, because you are treating a symptom on a schedule.
When continuous treatment is the honest answer
The EPA notes that private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so the standard of the water is entirely the owner's to maintain, and a USGS study of 2,100 private wells found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human-health benchmark. Where the entry route cannot be found or cannot be sealed, the answer is permanent disinfection rather than repeated shocks: an ultraviolet lamp with proper pretreatment, or continuous chlorination with a contact tank. Questions people ask about shocking a well
How long after shocking a well can the water be used?
Not until the chlorine has been flushed out and the smell is gone. Use bottled water for drinking and cooking during the contact period and the flush.
Does shock chlorination fix iron or sulfur smells?
It can knock back iron and sulfur bacteria and the odors they cause, but where the cause is chemistry rather than bacteria, the smell returns as soon as the chlorine is gone.
Should the softener and filters be bypassed?
Yes. Strong chlorine damages softener resin, exhausts carbon media and destroys reverse osmosis membranes, so isolate them and disinfect them separately per their instructions.
How often should a well be shocked?
It is a response to a positive test or to work that opened the system, not a routine. A well needing repeated shocks has a defect that disinfection is not addressing.
