A positive coliform result rarely means someone is about to get sick. It means something on the surface is reaching your water, because coliforms live in soil and vegetation and should not be present in a properly sealed well. Treat it as a signal that the well has a way in, and find that way in before you buy equipment.
Total coliform versus E. coli
Laboratories usually report total coliform and E. coli separately, and the difference matters. Total coliform present with no E. coli generally points to surface water or soil entering through a fault in the well, a cracked cap or poor grading. E. coli indicates fecal contamination and is a genuine health concern needing an immediate alternative supply while you deal with it. Nobody is testing this for you: private wells sit outside federal drinking water regulation, so the sampling is yours to arrange.
Rule out a bad sample first
Sampling error is a common cause of a surprising positive. A tap with an aerator, a hose fitting, a leaking faucet or a swab taken without disinfecting the spout all bring their own bacteria to the bottle. Retest carefully to the laboratory's instructions, from a sound cold tap, before spending anything. If the second sample is also positive, the result is real and the well needs attention. If it comes back clean, keep sampling properly and watch it over the year.
Find the way in, then disinfect
Inspect the well cap for cracks and a missing or perished gasket, check the casing for splits and that it stands proud of the ground, look at the grading so surface water runs away from the wellhead rather than toward it, and consider whether a septic field, a flooded yard or recent pump work explains the timing. Repair what you find, then shock chlorinate the well and plumbing to clear the existing contamination, flush thoroughly, and retest after the chlorine has cleared.
When to add permanent disinfection
Shock chlorination clears a one-off event; it does not keep a compromised well clean. If positives return after repair and disinfection, install continuous treatment, usually an ultraviolet system with adequate prefiltration, since UV needs clear water to work and sediment shields organisms from the lamp.
