Water chlorination system for a private well supply

A water chlorination system injects a measured dose of chlorine into a well supply continuously, so every drop entering the house is disinfected. It is the alternative to a UV lamp for a well with a bacteria problem, and unlike UV it leaves a residual in the plumbing and also oxidizes iron, manganese and sulfur on the way through.

Continuous chlorination against shock chlorination

These are different jobs and people confuse them constantly. Shock chlorination is a one-time procedure: a strong dose is poured into the well casing, circulated through the plumbing, left to sit, then flushed out. It disinfects the well and the pipework and is the correct response to a repair, a flood, or a single positive coliform result. Continuous chlorination is equipment: a pump doses a small amount into the line every time water flows, permanently. If the well tests positive again after shocking, the contamination is ongoing and continuous treatment is what is being asked for.

The parts of the system

A chemical feed pump draws sodium hypochlorite solution from a tank and injects it into the line, triggered by a flow switch or wired to the well pump so it doses only when water moves. The injection point is followed by a retention tank, which is simply a vessel large enough that water spends the required contact time with the chlorine before reaching a tap. After that comes a carbon filter to remove the chlorine taste and any excess, and the whole train sits ahead of a softener if one is fitted, since chlorine attacks softener resin.

Contact time is the design constraint

Chlorine does not act instantly. It needs time in contact with the water at a sufficient concentration to inactivate organisms, and that is why the retention tank is sized rather than picked off a shelf. Undersize it, or dose into a line that runs a short distance to the house, and you get chlorine taste with incomplete disinfection, which is the worst of both outcomes. The same contact time drives the oxidation of iron and sulfur, which is why chlorination systems on iron-bearing wells are usually followed by a backwashing filter to catch the solids that form.

When to choose it over UV

Private wells are not regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so the owner chooses the treatment. Chlorination wins where the water also has iron, manganese or a rotten egg sulfur smell, because it oxidizes all three while disinfecting, and where a residual is wanted in a long run of plumbing or a storage cistern. UV wins where the water is already clean and clear, because it adds nothing, needs no chemical handling and has almost no ongoing consumable beyond an annual lamp. Questions people ask about water chlorination system

Is shock chlorination the same as a chlorination system?

No. Shock chlorination is a one-time disinfection of the well and plumbing. A chlorination system doses continuously every time water flows, for wells with ongoing contamination.

Do I need a retention tank?

Almost always. Chlorine needs contact time to inactivate organisms, and a retention tank provides it. Without one you get the taste of chlorine without reliable disinfection.

Will chlorination remove the rotten egg smell?

Yes, it oxidizes hydrogen sulfide, which is why chlorination is often chosen over UV on wells that have a sulfur odor as well as a bacteria problem.

Does chlorine damage a water softener?

It degrades standard softener resin over time. Fit the carbon filter that removes chlorine ahead of the softener, or specify a higher crosslink resin built to resist it.
