UV water systems are the usual recommendation after a well tests positive for coliform bacteria, and the usual waste of money for a household on city water with no microbiological problem. The decision comes down to three questions: is there a microbiological risk, is the water clear enough for light to work, and is somebody going to change the lamp every year without being reminded.
Who actually needs one
Private wells are the main case, because they are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act and nobody disinfects them on the owner's behalf. Around 15 percent of the US population relies on private wells, and a positive coliform result, a shallow or older well, a well head near livestock or a septic field, or a supply that goes cloudy after rain all point toward continuous disinfection. Who does not
A household on a community water system already receives water disinfected to a regulatory standard, and installing UV changes nothing about the taste, hardness, chlorine or lead complaints that actually prompted the search. UV added after a whole-house carbon filter on city water can even be argued for on the basis that carbon removes the residual, but the everyday reason people buy it, worry about what is in the water, is not a microbiological worry and UV does not answer it.
What the install involves
The chamber goes near the end of the treatment train, downstream of sediment, iron and manganese removal, mounted where the lamp can be withdrawn along its full length, which needs clearance most utility rooms have not planned for. It needs a grounded outlet on a circuit that is not shared with anything that trips, unions on both sides for service, and a bypass. A licensed installer will also shock-chlorinate the plumbing before commissioning, because a UV system does not clean the pipe downstream of itself.
The ongoing commitment
A UV system is a maintenance contract more than a purchase: an annual lamp, a sleeve cleaned at the same time, and a retest to prove the result. Systems with an intensity sensor and an alarm are worth the extra, because the failure mode is invisible.
