Disinfection at home comes down to four approaches, and they differ less in whether they work than in what else they do and what they demand from the owner. Setting them side by side makes the choice straightforward, because in most households the deciding factor is not the disinfection at all but the other problems the water has.
Ultraviolet: simple, narrow, no residual
A lamp inactivates bacteria, viruses and protozoan cysts, including organisms that resist chlorine strongly. It adds nothing, changes no taste, needs no chemical handling and takes little space. Its demands are clarity, because particles shade organisms and iron films the sleeve, flow within its rating, and an annual lamp change. It leaves no residual, so nothing protects the plumbing downstream, and it does nothing at all about iron, sulfur, hardness or chemistry.
Chlorination: more equipment, more problems solved
Continuous chlorination needs a solution tank, a metering pump, a mixer, a contact tank and a carbon filter afterwards. In exchange it oxidizes as well as disinfects, turning dissolved iron, manganese and sulfide into particles a filter can catch, dealing with iron and sulfur bacteria that shield themselves from ultraviolet, and leaving a residual that protects the plumbing. On a difficult well it frequently replaces two or three separate stages, which is why it remains common despite the maintenance.
Ozone: powerful, and the most equipment
Ozone is generated on site, dissolved into the water, given contact time, vented safely and then filtered to remove what it has oxidized. It disinfects and oxidizes strongly, adds no chemical and leaves no taste, since it decomposes back to oxygen. It is also the most complex of the four, needs a dried air or oxygen feed to perform and to avoid corroding itself, and is harmful to breathe, so the venting is a safety requirement rather than a detail.
Boiling, and choosing between them
Boiling is the emergency answer: reliable for organisms, useless for chemistry, impractical as a routine. For a permanent system, the EPA notes private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so the choice is the owner's, and it usually follows the rest of the water analysis. Clean clear water with a bacteria problem: ultraviolet. Iron, manganese or sulfur alongside it: chlorination. A household wanting oxidation without stored chemicals: ozone.
