A UV light system on a well is the cheapest reliable way to deal with bacteria without adding chemicals, but it only works on water that is already clear and free of iron. On a private well the ultraviolet chamber is the last stage of a train, and most disappointing installations are the ones where it was made the only stage.
Confirm it is actually a bacteria problem
Private wells are outside the federal Safe Drinking Water Act, so testing is entirely the owner's job, and a USGS study of 2,100 private wells found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human health benchmark. Order a coliform and E. coli test before buying anything. If the well tests clean and the complaint is taste, staining or scale, ultraviolet is the wrong purchase, because it removes nothing whatsoever from the water.
Pretreatment decides whether the lamp matters
Ultraviolet has to physically reach an organism to inactivate it. Sediment shields bacteria, and iron, manganese and tannins absorb the light and coat the quartz sleeve so the dose collapses within weeks. A well installation therefore normally runs a sediment cartridge first, iron and manganese removal where the test shows them, and often a softener, with the UV chamber last before the house. Penn State Extension puts the recommended maximums at 0.3 mg/L for iron and 0.05 mg/L for manganese, and water above those will foul a sleeve fast.
Sizing against the pump, not the household average
The rated flow of a UV unit is the maximum at which it can still deliver its design dose. Size it against what your well pump can deliver, since the pump does not know how many fixtures are open, and against realistic peak demand such as a shower and a washing machine together. A unit that is comfortable at average use and starved at peak passes untreated water precisely when the most water is being used. Oversizing a chamber costs a little more and fails safe.
Placement and plumbing details
Mount the chamber where the lamp can be withdrawn along its full length, which is more clearance than people expect in a crowded pump room. Keep it after any tank or filter so nothing downstream can reintroduce contamination, put a solenoid valve on the outlet if you want flow to stop when the lamp fails, and give it a dedicated outlet that is not shared with the well pump. Sanitize the household plumbing when the system is first commissioned, since UV does nothing about bacteria already living in the pipes.
The maintenance that keeps it honest
Replace the lamp annually, clean the quartz sleeve with an acid cleaner at the same time, and change any prefilter cartridges on their own schedule. Choose a controller with an ultraviolet intensity sensor rather than only an hour counter if anyone in the house is elderly, pregnant or immune compromised. Does a UV system work on well water with iron?
Not reliably. Iron absorbs ultraviolet light and coats the quartz sleeve, so the effective dose falls quickly. Iron removal has to sit upstream, with Penn State Extension citing a recommended maximum of 0.3 mg/L iron.
Do I still need to test after installing UV?
Yes. A lamp can be lit and still be past its useful output, and a fouled sleeve looks fine from outside. Annual coliform testing is what proves the system is doing its job.
Will UV fix the smell or the staining in my well water?
No. Ultraviolet inactivates organisms and removes nothing, so sulfur odor, iron staining and hardness are unaffected. Those need oxidation, filtration or softening as separate stages.
What happens during a power cut?
The lamp goes out and the well pump usually stops too, but water can still be drawn from the pressure tank untreated. A solenoid valve on the UV outlet closes the line whenever the lamp is not proven, which is the safer arrangement.
