On a private well, ultraviolet disinfection is rarely bought on its own. It is the last link in a chain, and the links ahead of it decide whether it works at all. A well water UV filtration system means sediment, iron and clarity treatment sized for your water, then a UV chamber sized for your peak flow, arranged so the light actually reaches the organisms it is meant to inactivate.
Start with the test, not the equipment
Private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, and around 15 percent of the US population, over 43 million people in more than 23 million households, rely on them. Nobody samples yours but you. Before designing anything, get a panel that includes total coliform and E. coli, iron, manganese, hardness, turbidity, tannins and pH. Those last five are not idle curiosity: they are the parameters that determine whether ultraviolet light can penetrate your water, and a UV unit specified without them is a guess. Pretreatment, in the order it has to go
Sediment comes out first, usually with a separator or a coarse cartridge followed by a finer one, because suspended particles physically shade organisms from the lamp. Dissolved iron and manganese come next, since both plate onto the quartz sleeve and absorb ultraviolet; vendors sell packaged whole house iron and sulfur systems for exactly this duty with published service flow ratings. Tannins and colour, common in shallow wells near organic soils, absorb ultraviolet strongly and need their own stage. Softening, if you need it, sits after the iron treatment. Only then does the water reach the UV chamber.
Sizing the chamber to the well, not the house
UV units are rated at a flow with an assumed transmittance, and both assumptions have to hold in your installation. Size from the peak simultaneous demand the well and pressure tank can actually deliver, since a chamber sized for average use will be overrun every time two showers run together and the dose falls accordingly. Where the water is at the edge of the transmittance assumption, step up a size rather than hoping. Fit isolation valves and a bypass, leave clearance to withdraw the lamp, and choose a unit with an intensity monitor so a fouled sleeve raises an alarm instead of silently passing untreated water.
After a positive coliform result
A positive test needs two things: an immediate response and a cause. Shock chlorinate the well and the plumbing, flush thoroughly, and retest after the chlorine has cleared, twice if you can, because a single clean result after disinfection proves less than a pair. At the same time look for the route in: a cracked or short casing, a missing or damaged well cap, surface water pooling at the wellhead, a septic field too close, or a failed pitless adapter. UV is the right ongoing safeguard, but fitting a lamp over an unresolved surface water route treats the symptom and leaves the well open.
Questions people ask about well water uv filtration system
Does a UV system remove iron or hardness from well water?
No. UV only inactivates microorganisms. Iron, manganese, hardness, nitrate and arsenic all need their own treatment stages ahead of the lamp.
Is UV enough on its own after a coliform hit?
It protects the household going forward, but it does not fix how the bacteria got in. Shock chlorinate, retest, and inspect the casing, cap and wellhead drainage.
Where should the UV unit go in the sequence?
Last, immediately before the water enters the house, after sediment, iron and any colour treatment. Placing it earlier fouls the sleeve and cuts the disinfection dose.
Do I need to test again once UV is installed?
Yes. Annual coliform testing remains sensible, because it is the only way to confirm the lamp, sleeve and pretreatment are still doing what they were sized to do.
