A river water filtration system has to deal with a supply that changes week to week, which is what makes it harder than treating a well. Surface water carries silt that spikes after rain, organic color from leaves and soil, and living organisms including bacteria and protozoa, and all of that varies with season and weather. The design principle is staged: take the big material out mechanically, polish what remains, then disinfect what is left.

Why a river is harder than a well

Groundwater has been filtered by the ground it moved through, so a well is usually clear and consistent, with problems that are chemical and stable enough to design around. A river is open to the sky. Turbidity climbs sharply after heavy rain and can stay up for days, tannins and other organics color the water and feed disinfection byproducts, algae blooms change taste and smell seasonally, and there is always a microbiological load. Anything upstream, from agriculture to a failed septic system, arrives at your intake. The consequence is that a river system must be designed for the worst day rather than the average one, and inspected far more often.

The intake and the rough stages

Start at the water. A screened intake held off the riverbed and below the surface, on a float or a fixed stand, avoids both the silt layer and the floating debris. A settling or holding tank ahead of the treatment gives heavy solids somewhere to drop out and buffers the supply during a storm. From there a self-cleaning spin-down separator handles sand and grit with a flush valve you can operate without dismantling anything. Then staged cartridge or bag filtration, coarse first and progressively finer, so each stage protects the next. Expect to change these far more often than a well household does, and keep spares on hand for storm weeks.

Polishing and disinfection

Once the water is visually clear, carbon handles taste, odor and organic color, and it also reduces the organic load that would otherwise react with a disinfectant. Fine or ultrafiltration membranes are worth adding where cysts are a concern, because they exclude organisms by size rather than trusting a dose. Disinfection then goes last, either an ultraviolet chamber sized to the flow or a chlorination system with adequate contact time. Ultraviolet only works on clear water, so if turbidity rises the disinfection stage is the first thing to lose effectiveness. That is the argument for redundancy on a surface supply: two barriers, so a bad day does not leave you with none.

Rules, testing and staying honest about it

Drawing from a river usually engages water rights and often local health department rules for a dwelling, so check both before building anything. Understand also that you are your own utility: the EPA requires every community water system to publish an annual Consumer Confidence Report and maintains a finder for them, and no such report exists for a private intake.
