Designing a river water filter system for a household supply

Treating river water for household use is a different discipline from treating a well or a mains supply. Surface water carries silt, organic matter and biological contamination continuously, and its character changes with every rainfall, which is the defining problem: a system that works in August must still work on the day the river runs brown.

Why surface water is the hard case

A well draws water that has been filtered by the ground and is fairly stable in composition. A river carries everything its catchment gave it: suspended silt and clay, leaf tannins and dissolved organics, agricultural runoff, and pathogens from livestock and wildlife upstream. Turbidity can rise sharply within hours of a storm and stay elevated for days. Any design built around typical conditions fails exactly when it matters, so the system has to be sized and staged for the worst the river does, not for how it looks on a fine day.

The stages, in order

Intake first, screened and positioned off the bed so it does not draw the silt layer, ideally with a settling tank after it, since letting gravity remove the heavy fraction costs nothing and saves every stage that follows. Then multi stage mechanical filtration, coarse to fine, usually a backwashing media tank followed by cartridges, because a cartridge only system is overwhelmed by surface water. Then carbon for organics, tannins and taste. Then disinfection, and only then storage or distribution.

Disinfection is not optional

River water must be assumed to carry pathogens at all times. Ultraviolet is the usual domestic answer, but UV has a hard dependency the sales page often underplays: it only works on water that is already clear, because turbidity shadows organisms from the lamp and dissolved iron or organics absorb the wavelength. So the filtration ahead of it is what makes the UV honest, and a UV unit protecting inadequate filtration is providing reassurance rather than disinfection. Chlorination with contact time is the alternative where clarity cannot be guaranteed.

Legality, testing and upkeep

Abstracting from a watercourse is regulated in most places and may need a licence or registration regardless of how small the take is, so establish that before buying equipment. Test the raw water and the treated water, not just once but seasonally, since a river's chemistry and biology shift through the year. Expect substantially more maintenance than any other source: prefilters blind quickly after storms, UV sleeves need regular cleaning to stay transmissive, and lamps are replaced annually whether or not they still glow.
