How UV disinfection actually works

There are no chemicals, no change in taste, and no residual protection downstream: water is disinfected at the moment of passage only. Lamps dim gradually with age rather than failing outright, so the lamp is replaced on its published schedule and the sleeve is cleaned whenever it films over.
Why prefiltration decides whether UV works at all
UV light has to reach the microbe to disable it. Turbidity, sediment particles and iron staining all shadow or absorb the light, letting organisms pass through untouched in cloudy water. That is why every credible UV install puts sediment filtration ahead of the lamp, and iron or hardness treatment ahead of that where a test finds them, since mineral scale also coats the quartz sleeve and dims the dose from inside.
