Most ultraviolet installations that fail do so because of where they were placed, not because of the lamp. The unit is a finishing stage: it needs clear water arriving at a controlled flow, and it protects everything downstream of it and nothing upstream. Getting the order right in the treatment train is most of the job, and it is decided before any equipment is bought.

The order of stages, and why it is fixed

Sediment filtration goes first, because particles shade organisms from the light and because grit damages everything after it. Iron and manganese treatment comes next where the test calls for it, since both deposit films on the quartz sleeve that cut transmission without any fault being reported. Softening, if fitted, sits in the same region for the same reason, because scale on the sleeve behaves like a permanent shade. The ultraviolet chamber goes last, as close as practical to where water enters the house, so that nothing downstream can reintroduce what the lamp has just dealt with.

What clear water means in practice

Ultraviolet performance depends on how far the light penetrates, which manufacturers express as a transmittance figure. Water that looks clear to the eye can still be poor at passing ultraviolet, because dissolved organic material and tannins absorb the wavelength that does the work. That is why a well with a tea colored cast needs its color dealt with before the lamp will do anything reliable, and why a sediment filter alone is not always enough. Where transmittance is marginal, the answer is a larger chamber or better pretreatment rather than hoping.

Installation details that decide reliability

Fit isolation valves either side so the sleeve can be serviced without draining the house, and leave the clearance the chamber needs to withdraw the lamp. Mount it where a leak will not ruin anything, since a sleeve o-ring is a wear part. Give it a dedicated, reliable power supply, because a unit that loses power silently is treating nothing while the house draws water. Where the well pump cycles, check that the flow through the chamber at pump start does not exceed the rating, and fit a flow restrictor where it might.

What it does not replace

Ultraviolet is a disinfection stage and nothing else. It leaves hardness, iron, nitrate, arsenic, chemicals and taste exactly as it found them, so a house with those problems needs the stages that address them regardless. It also does not protect the plumbing downstream in the way a chemical residual does: there is no carry over, so a contamination source inside the house is not covered. The EPA notes private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, which makes periodic testing after the lamp the only proof it is working.
