Fitting ultraviolet to a well is a decision with a right answer that varies by well. Plenty of deep drilled wells test clean year after year and never need it. Plenty of shallow and spring fed sources need it and have owners who have never tested. What separates them is a bacteriological result and an honest look at the wellhead.
Test before you decide
The EPA notes that private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, that around 15 percent of the US population, over 43 million people in more than 23 million households, rely on them, and that a USGS study of 2,100 private wells found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human health benchmark. Coliform bacteria are invisible, tasteless and odorless, so an annual test is the only way the question gets answered at all.
Correct the well before treating the water
Bacterial contamination is usually an entry problem rather than an aquifer problem. Check the casing height above grade, the fall of the ground away from it, the sanitary seal and cap, and whether surface water can reach the annulus. Look at septic separation distances, abandoned wells nearby and livestock access. Shock chlorinate and retest twice. A well that comes back clean and stays clean had a route in that you have now closed, and no lamp was needed.
When UV is genuinely the answer
Where contamination recurs after the wellhead has been corrected and shock chlorination has not held. Where the source is shallow, dug or spring fed and therefore under the influence of surface water. Where flooding periodically reaches the wellhead. Where the property is seasonal and the well stands unused for months. And where someone in the household is immunocompromised, elderly or an infant and the margin matters more than the cost.
What must be true for it to work
Clear water, which means the filtration ahead of it is what makes the disinfection real: sediment to a fine rating, plus iron, manganese and hardness treatment where present, since all of those block or absorb the wavelength. A unit rated for peak simultaneous flow rather than average. Fitted last in the train, close to distribution, since nothing downstream is protected. And an annual lamp change on the calendar.
