Ultraviolet at a drinking water tap is a small, easily fitted stage that treats a modest volume, and whether it is the right thing depends entirely on why it is being fitted. As a final barrier on water that is generally trusted it makes sense. As an answer to a supply with a microbiological problem it is the wrong scope, and the distinction is worth being blunt about.

What a point of use lamp covers

Whatever comes out of that one tap and nothing else. Bacteria, viruses and protozoan cysts in that water are inactivated, including organisms that resist chlorine strongly. Showers, teeth cleaning, food washed at another sink, ice from an unfiltered fridge line and the washing machine all continue to receive untreated water. That is a reasonable scope where the supply is monitored and the lamp is a belt and braces measure on drinking water, and an inadequate one where the supply itself is the problem.

Where it genuinely fits

Rented accommodation and apartments where work on the incoming main is not possible. Households on a community supply wanting a barrier against a distribution event or a boil notice. Holiday properties where the drinking water tap is the only one that matters. And as a last stage after a filtration train, where its job is to deal with anything growing in the filters or the tubing downstream of them, which is a real and often overlooked function.

What it still needs

The same three things as any ultraviolet installation, at smaller scale. Water clear enough for light to reach organisms, which means a sediment cartridge ahead of it and, on well water, iron and hardness treatment too, since all of those film the quartz sleeve. Flow within the unit's rating, which is easier at one tap. And an annual lamp change regardless of whether it still glows, because germicidal output fades long before the visible light does.

What it does not do

It changes no chemistry at all. Hardness, iron, nitrate, arsenic, lead, chlorine and taste leave the chamber exactly as they arrived. If the reason for looking is a taste complaint or a laboratory result showing a dissolved contaminant, this is the wrong stage entirely and carbon or reverse osmosis is what the water needs.
