UV light for water system disinfection: what it does and needs

A UV light for water system disinfection is a lamp inside a quartz sleeve that water flows past on its way into the house. The ultraviolet energy damages the genetic material of bacteria, viruses and protozoa so they cannot reproduce, which makes the water microbiologically safe without adding any chemical to it.

It disinfects, it does not filter

Ultraviolet treatment changes nothing you can measure in a chemical test. Hardness, iron, nitrate, lead, arsenic, taste and odor all pass through untouched, because the lamp only inactivates living organisms. It also leaves no residual, so it protects only the water passing the lamp at that moment: bacteria growing in a pipe or a fixture downstream are unaffected. That is why a system that has been opened up for work is normally shock chlorinated first, with the ultraviolet unit then holding the line.

Pretreatment is not optional

Ultraviolet light has to reach the organism to kill it, so anything that shadows or scatters it defeats the lamp. Sediment, turbidity, iron, manganese and tannins all reduce transmittance, and organisms hiding behind a particle survive the pass. A sediment cartridge is the minimum, and hard water or iron-bearing water needs treatment ahead of the lamp too, because scale and iron film on the quartz sleeve block the light just as effectively as suspended particles. The lamp and sleeve are maintenance items

A ultraviolet lamp keeps glowing long after its output has dropped below the level that disinfects, so it is replaced annually regardless of whether it still lights. That single fact catches out more households than anything else about these systems. The quartz sleeve is cleaned at the same visit, since a film on it blocks the light. Many units include a sensor or an alarm, which is worth having: a silent, still-glowing lamp giving no disinfection is exactly the failure you cannot see.

Who needs one

The EPA notes that private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so a well owner is responsible for their own microbiological safety. A USGS study of 2,100 private wells found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human-health benchmark. Ultraviolet is the standard answer for a well that tests positive for coliform bacteria and keeps doing so after shocking, and for cistern and surface-influenced supplies. How often does a UV lamp need replacing?

Annually in almost every household unit. The lamp keeps lighting after its disinfecting output has faded, so age rather than appearance decides the change.

Does UV treatment change the taste of the water?

No. It adds nothing and removes no chemicals, so taste, hardness and mineral content are exactly as they were before the water passed the lamp.

Can I fit UV without any pretreatment?

Not safely. Sediment, iron and hardness block the light and shield organisms, so a sediment filter is the minimum and iron or hardness treatment is often needed too.
