UV light filtration is disinfection rather than straining. Water flows through a chamber around a lamp that emits ultraviolet light at a germicidal wavelength, and that light damages the genetic material of bacteria, viruses and cysts so they cannot reproduce or infect. Nothing is taken out of the water: the organisms remain, but they are no longer able to make anyone ill.
What the lamp is actually doing
The lamp sits inside a clear quartz sleeve so it never touches the water. As water passes the sleeve it receives a dose, which is the intensity of the light multiplied by the time the water spends beside it. That is why every unit carries a flow rating: push water through faster than the chamber is rated for and each drop gets less exposure, even though the lamp looks exactly as bright. The result is not filtered water in the usual sense. It is water whose living organisms have been switched off, leaving the minerals, metals, taste and smell exactly as they were.
Clear water first, or the light never lands
Ultraviolet light works line of sight. Silt, rust particles, tannin color and even a light haze scatter or absorb the light, and a bacterium riding on a speck of sediment can pass through in its shadow completely untouched. This is why almost every UV installation sits behind a sediment filter, and behind iron or manganese treatment when a well carries either, since both stain the quartz sleeve from the inside of the water side and quietly starve the chamber of intensity. Treating the water clear is not an upgrade to a UV system. It is the condition under which the system does anything at all.
Where it belongs in a private well setup
UV is the standard answer to a well that tests positive for coliform or E. coli, because it handles microbes continuously without adding chemicals or changing the taste. The reason it comes up so often on wells is regulatory: the EPA notes that private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so nobody tests them on a schedule for the owner, and a USGS study of 2,100 private wells found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human health benchmark. Keeping the dose you paid for
A UV lamp does not burn out the way a bulb does. It keeps glowing while its germicidal output falls away, which is the failure mode that catches people out: the light is on, the water is untreated. Manufacturers set a service life for the lamp in operating hours, usually about a year of continuous use, and the sleeve needs wiping clean at the same visit because film on the quartz cuts the dose just as effectively as a weak lamp. The limits, stated plainly
UV does nothing to hardness, iron, nitrate, arsenic, lead, PFAS, chlorine or taste, because none of those are alive. It also treats only the water passing through the chamber at that moment, so anything living downstream in the plumbing, in a pressure tank or in a water heater is not addressed by the lamp. After a well is disinfected or pipework is opened, the system needs shocking and flushing rather than trusting the UV to catch up. Treat UV as one stage aimed squarely at biology, and pair it with whatever the water test says you need for chemistry.

Does UV light filtration remove anything from the water?
No. It inactivates living organisms as they pass the lamp. Minerals, metals, hardness, taste and odor leave the chamber exactly as they arrived, so UV is always paired with filtration for anything chemical.
Do I need a sediment filter before a UV unit?
Almost always. Particles shade microbes from the light and cloud the quartz sleeve, so a sediment filter ahead of the chamber is treated as part of the UV installation rather than an optional extra.
How often does the lamp need changing?
Manufacturers rate lamps in operating hours, commonly about a year of continuous service. The lamp still lights after that point while its germicidal output has faded, so replace it on schedule rather than on appearance.
Will UV help with the smell or taste of my water?
Not directly. If odor comes from sulfur, iron bacteria or chlorine, the fix is filtration or oxidation. UV can stop a bacterial population that contributes to smell, but it changes nothing about dissolved chemistry.
