When a UV light for well water supplies is worth fitting

Fitting ultraviolet disinfection to a well is a decision, not a default. Plenty of wells produce microbiologically sound water year after year and never need it, and plenty of others need it urgently and have owners who have never tested. What separates the two is a bacteriological test and an honest look at the wellhead, and both come before any equipment.

Why well owners carry this alone

The EPA notes that private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so no utility is sampling yours and no report will arrive. Around 15 percent of the US population, over 43 million people in more than 23 million households, rely on private wells, and a USGS study of 2,100 private wells found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human health benchmark. Coliform bacteria are not visible, do not smell and do not affect taste, so the only way to know is to test annually.

Fix the wellhead before buying a lamp

Bacteria in a well is usually an entry problem rather than an aquifer problem, and treating the symptom leaves the route open. Check that the casing extends well above grade and that the ground slopes away from it, that the sanitary seal and cap are intact and vermin proof, and that no surface water can reach the annulus. Look at septic separation distances, at any abandoned well nearby, and at livestock access. Shock chlorinate, then retest twice: a well that comes back clean and stays clean had an entry problem you have now closed.

When UV is the right answer

Fit it where contamination recurs after the wellhead has been corrected and shock chlorination has not held, where the source is shallow, dug or spring fed and therefore under surface influence, where flooding periodically reaches the wellhead, or where someone in the household is immunocompromised, elderly or an infant and the margin matters more. It is also the sensible standing safeguard on a seasonal or intermittently used property, where a well sits stagnant for months and comes back with different results each time.

What has to be true for it to work

UV needs clear water, so the filtration ahead of it is what makes it effective: sediment down to a fine rating, plus iron and hardness treatment where those are present, since all of them block the wavelength. The unit must be rated for peak flow rather than average, or it under doses exactly when the household is using most water.
