A reverse osmosis under sink water filter forces water through a semipermeable membrane, so it removes dissolved contaminants that carbon-only filters pass straight through. That is the whole reason to choose one over a cheaper cartridge: if your concern is dissolved solids, metals, nitrates or PFAS rather than just taste and chlorine, the membrane is doing work no simple filter can.
The membrane is the difference, not the box
A basic under-sink filter is one or two carbon cartridges: excellent for chlorine, taste and odor, largely blind to dissolved minerals and salts. An RO unit puts a membrane behind those carbon stages. Water is pushed through it under pressure, the treated stream goes to a storage tank or straight to your faucet, and the concentrated reject stream goes to the drain. That drain connection and the dedicated faucet are what make RO a bigger install than a cartridge swap, and they are also why it can remove what carbon cannot.
What it removes, and the PFAS question
Reverse osmosis is one of the treatment approaches commonly used against dissolved contaminants including the PFAS group. The EPA's 2024 rule set enforceable limits for several PFAS compounds in public water systems, at 4.0 parts per trillion for PFOA and PFOS, and its May 2026 proposal keeps the PFOA and PFOS limits with a compliance option extending to 2031 while proposing to rescind the limits for the other listed compounds. If PFAS is your reason for shopping, verify the specific unit you buy is certified for that reduction claim rather than assuming the category delivers it.
Fitting one in the cabinet
Expect to give up real space under the sink: a pressurized storage tank about the size of a small propane cylinder, a manifold of filter housings on the cabinet wall, a hole in the sink deck or countertop for the dedicated faucet, and a saddle connection to the drain line. Tankless designs trade the storage tank for a pump and a slimmer footprint. Measure the cabinet before ordering and check where your disposal and existing plumbing already sit, because the tank and the disposal often want the same corner.
Deciding whether you need the membrane
Test first, then buy. If a lab report or your utility's quality data shows the problems are chlorine, taste and odor, a carbon system does the job with fewer parts and no drain line. If it shows dissolved contaminants such as nitrates, arsenic, sodium or PFAS, the membrane earns its place. Questions people ask about reverse osmosis under sink water filter
Does an under-sink RO filter treat the whole house?
No. It is a point-of-use system serving one dedicated faucet, usually at the kitchen sink. Whole-house RO exists but is a much larger installation with its own storage and pumping.
Why does an RO unit need a drain connection?
The membrane splits incoming water into a treated stream and a concentrated reject stream. The reject stream has to go somewhere, so the unit ties into the sink drain with a small saddle fitting.
Will RO water taste different?
Usually yes: removing dissolved solids gives a flat, clean taste some people love and others find empty. Many systems offer a remineralization stage that adds a small amount of minerals back for taste.
Is an RO filter overkill for city water?
Not necessarily, but check your Consumer Confidence Report first. If it flags nothing beyond chlorine and taste, a carbon filter is simpler; if dissolved contaminants appear, RO is the appropriate tool.
