Under sink reverse osmosis systems are sold on stage counts and gallon ratings, and neither is the thing that decides whether one works in your kitchen. Four practical questions do, and answering them first usually narrows a long list to a handful of genuine candidates before any specification is compared.

Measure the cabinet before anything

A conventional system needs room for a filter stack and a pressure tank, and the stack needs clearance below it equal to a cartridge length so elements can be pulled down at service time. Measure the usable width, depth and height around the trap and any waste disposer, and remember the tank is heavy when full and stands upright. If the space is genuinely tight, compact and tankless designs exist and trade capacity or continuous production for the footprint, which is a fair swap in a small kitchen.

Stage count is not a quality measure

The work is done by a sediment prefilter, a carbon prefilter, the membrane and a polishing carbon, with an optional remineralization cartridge. That is the useful set. Systems advertising many more stages are usually splitting those functions across additional housings, which adds restriction, cost and more o-rings to leak without adding capability. What matters is the membrane specification, the quality of the prefilters protecting it, and whether replacement cartridges are standard sizes you can buy from more than one supplier.

Line pressure and the tank

Reverse osmosis is driven by incoming pressure pushing water against the membrane, so a house with low pressure will see slow production and a tank that never quite fills, and a booster pump becomes part of the specification rather than an upgrade. Check pressure at the sink before ordering. The storage tank also needs an air charge on its dry side set to specification, and a tank at the wrong pressure delivers a trickle, which is the fault most often mistaken for a failing membrane on a new system.

The faucet, and whether an air gap is required

Treated water goes to its own small tap so it never shares a path with unfiltered hot water through the mixer, which means a spare knockout in the sink deck or a hole drilled through the worktop, straightforward in stainless and a specialist job in stone.
