A water filter reverse osmosis under sink system is a stack of stages in one cabinet: sediment and carbon prefilters, a semi-permeable membrane, a storage arrangement and a final polish before the dedicated faucet. The membrane does the heavy work, rejecting dissolved solids that no cartridge filter touches. Everything else in the system exists to protect the membrane or to make its output usable at a normal tap.

What each stage is for

The sediment prefilter stops particles scoring the membrane. The carbon prefilter strips chlorine and chloramine, which would otherwise chemically degrade the membrane material and destroy it quickly. The membrane rejects dissolved solids, including many metals, nitrate and a wide range of contaminants, sending them to drain as concentrate. A postfilter polishes taste after storage, and some systems add a remineralizing cartridge to put mineral content and mouthfeel back into water the membrane stripped.

Tank or tankless

Membranes produce slowly, so classic systems accumulate treated water in a pressurized bladder tank under the sink and deliver it on demand. That tank takes cabinet space and needs its air charge checked when flow gets weak. Tankless designs use a pump and a higher-output membrane to produce on demand instead, freeing the space and avoiding stored water, at the cost of needing electricity and running noisier. Both give the same treated water; the difference is space, power and how fast a glass fills.

What decides whether it fits under your sink

Measure before you buy. You need room for the manifold, the tank if there is one, cartridge change clearance in front of the housings, a cold water feed to tap into, a drain saddle or connection on the waste line, a hole in the countertop or sink deck for the dedicated faucet, and an outlet if the system is powered. Granite and quartz countertops without a spare hole are the most common surprise, since drilling them is a specialist job.

Choosing by what your water contains

Reverse osmosis is the broadest point-of-use treatment available, which is why it is the default answer to nitrate, arsenic, high dissolved solids and a long list of named contaminants. Does an under-sink reverse osmosis system need electricity?

Traditional tank systems run on line pressure alone and need no outlet. Tankless and pump-assisted designs need power, and so do systems with a booster pump added because household pressure is too low for good membrane performance.

How many stages does an under-sink RO system need?

Sediment, carbon, membrane and postfilter is the functional core. Extra stages are usually additional carbon or a remineralizer, so a higher stage count is not automatically better treatment, just more cartridges to replace.

Can reverse osmosis feed my refrigerator ice maker?

Yes, and it is a common addition, but the long slow production rate means an ice maker can outpace the system. Tank capacity and membrane output matter more here than they do for a drinking faucet alone.

Does reverse osmosis remove hardness?

The membrane does reject hardness minerals, so the water at that one faucet is effectively soft. It does nothing for the rest of the house, and very hard feed water scales the membrane, so softening upstream extends its life.
