Tank pressure matters separately: the air charge in an empty tank is set by the manufacturer, and a tank that dispenses only a trickle is often just undercharged rather than failed.
Stage order, and what each stage protects
Sediment first, so grit does not reach anything expensive. Carbon second, and this is the critical one, because chlorine in city water destroys the thin film composite membrane and the damage is permanent rather than gradual. The membrane third. The post-carbon polish sits after the tank, on the way to the faucet, because water sitting in a bladder tank picks up a taste that the final cartridge removes. An optional remineralization cartridge goes at the end. Skipping or delaying the carbon pre-filter change is the single most common reason a membrane fails years earlier than it should.
Cabinet space, the disposal and the fridge line
Measure the cabinet before ordering. The tank is the bulkiest part and often has to lie on its side or live in an adjacent cabinet with a longer run of tubing. Keep the drain saddle away from the garbage disposal outlet, or the noise and the backflow will make you redo it. Commissioning and ongoing service
After installation, fill and drain the tank completely several times before drinking, which flushes preservative from the membrane and fines from the carbon. Check every push-fit joint with a paper towel over the next day, since a slow weep inside a closed cabinet does its damage unseen. Pre-filters are changed on a regular cycle, the membrane far less often, and a total dissolved solids meter comparing feed and product water is the objective way to know when the membrane is done.
