A faucet filter screws onto the end of your kitchen tap in place of the aerator and diverts water through a small carbon cartridge when you flip a lever. It is the fastest, cheapest way to improve the taste of drinking water and it needs no tools, no plumbing and no landlord permission. The trade-offs are cartridge life, flow rate and the fact that it treats one tap only.
How the diverter works
Unscrew the aerator from your faucet spout and the filter body threads onto the same fitting. Inside is a small valve: in one position water runs straight through unfiltered at full flow, in the other it is diverted through the cartridge. That switch is the whole reason these units are practical, because it means you are not pushing dishwashing and pot-filling volumes through a cartridge that was only ever meant for drinking water. Most kits include several thread adapters, but pull-out sprayers and many designer faucets have no removable aerator at all, so check yours before buying.
What the cartridge actually removes
The medium is almost always activated carbon, sometimes as a block with additional media layered in. Carbon works by adsorption and it is very good at the compounds that make water taste and smell bad, chlorine chief among them. Better cartridges are independently certified for a specific list that can include lead, and that certification is the only thing worth trusting: a general claim about contaminants on the box is not evidence. What a faucet filter cannot do is soften water, remove nitrate, or deal with dissolved iron, and none of these units treat bacteria unless they are specifically built and certified to.
Flow, contact time and cartridge life
Carbon needs time in contact with the water to work, which is why filtered flow is deliberately slower than the tap running wide open. If your unit seems too slow, that is usually the design rather than a fault, though a loading cartridge does get slower still. Cartridge life is quoted in gallons and in months, and whichever arrives first is the one that counts, because carbon eventually saturates whether you use it or not. Running hot water through a faucet filter is the most common way people destroy one early, since heat drives adsorbed compounds back off the carbon. Always divert to unfiltered before running hot.
When to go further than a faucet filter
If the goal is better tasting drinking and coffee water in a rental or a second kitchen, a faucet filter is genuinely the right answer and anything larger is over-buying. Move up when one of three things is true: you need certified removal of something specific that faucet cartridges are not rated for, you are filtering enough volume that cartridge changes have become a monthly ritual, or you want filtered water at more than one fixture. Questions people ask about faucet filters
Will a faucet filter fit any tap?
Only taps with a removable aerator. Pull-out and pull-down sprayer faucets, and many designer models, have no thread to mount on, so a countertop or under-sink unit is the alternative.
Can I run hot water through it?
No. Heat releases compounds the carbon has already adsorbed and can distort the housing. Switch the diverter to unfiltered before you draw hot water.
Do faucet filters remove lead?
Some do, but only models specifically certified for lead reduction, and only while the cartridge is within its rated life. Check the certification rather than the marketing copy.
Why is my filtered flow so slow?
Carbon needs contact time, so filtered flow is slower by design. If it has become dramatically slower than when new, the cartridge is loaded and due for replacement.
