Melt blown filter cartridge: what it catches and when to change it

A melt blown filter cartridge is made by extruding molten polypropylene into fine fibers and spinning them onto a core, building a dense mat with no binders or adhesives. That construction makes it a depth filter: particles are trapped throughout the wall rather than only on the surface, which is why it holds far more dirt than its size suggests before flow starts to suffer.

Depth filtration and graded density

Better melt blown cartridges are made with graded density, meaning the fibers are laid loosely on the outside and progressively tighter toward the center. Water entering the cartridge meets coarse structure first, which catches large particles near the surface, then finer structure that captures the small ones deeper in. The result is that the whole wall thickness does work rather than just the outer skin, so the cartridge holds a lot of sediment before pressure drop climbs. A uniform density cartridge blinds off much sooner for the same nominal rating.

Nominal ratings and what they promise

Melt blown cartridges carry nominal micron ratings, which describe the size at which a stated proportion of particles is captured rather than an absolute cutoff. That is honest engineering, not marketing weakness: depth filters work statistically. It does mean two cartridges with the same printed rating from different makers can perform differently, and it means a melt blown cartridge is not a barrier for organisms or for anything requiring an absolute rating. For sediment reduction ahead of other equipment, which is what these are for, nominal is exactly right.

Where melt blown beats pleated and string wound

Pleated cartridges have far more surface area and are washable in some grades, so they suit high flow duty with light, coarse sediment and can be reused. String wound cartridges are wound from yarn and were the older standard, tolerant of higher temperatures but prone to unloading trapped dirt when pressure fluctuates. Melt blown sits between them: cheap, disposable, high dirt holding capacity and no fiber shedding, which makes it the default prefilter for well water, for reverse osmosis systems and ahead of carbon tanks.

Iron will clog it faster than sediment

If a melt blown cartridge turns orange and needs changing far too often, you are filtering oxidized iron rather than sand. Penn State Extension notes that iron and manganese carry secondary, aesthetic standards, with recommended maximums of 0.3 mg/L for iron and 0.05 mg/L for manganese, and that oxidized iron fouls treatment media. A cartridge is not iron treatment; it simply intercepts the rust particles that formed after the water met air. The fix is an oxidizing iron filter upstream, after which the sediment cartridge lasts a normal life.

Changing on pressure, not on calendar

The right time to change a melt blown cartridge is when the pressure drop across it rises, which is why a pair of gauges on either side of the housing is a worthwhile addition on any well system. Without gauges, the practical signs are falling flow at fixtures, a shower that weakens when another tap runs, and a visibly loaded cartridge on inspection. Never wash and reuse a melt blown cartridge; the trapped particles are held in the depth of the mat and cannot be flushed back out.
