A melt blown filter is a sediment cartridge spun from molten plastic fiber into a dense tube with no seams and no glue. It catches dirt, grit, rust flakes and other suspended solids by depth, holding particles all the way through the wall rather than only on the surface. It is the cheapest and most common first stage in a household filter train, and it is the one people replace most often.
How the cartridge is made and why that matters
The fiber is extruded and blown onto a spinning core, so the wall builds up in layers: loose and open on the outside, progressively tighter toward the middle. Water enters the outer face, the big particles stop near the surface and the fine ones work their way in until they lodge. That graded structure is why a melt blown cartridge holds a useful amount of dirt before it blocks, and why it clogs from the outside in rather than all at once. It also means the cartridge is a single piece of polypropylene with nothing to shed, which is the reason it is used ahead of softeners, carbon tanks and reverse osmosis membranes.
Micron ratings, nominal and absolute
Almost every melt blown cartridge is sold with a nominal rating, which means it stops most particles of that size but not all of them. An absolute rating, which is far more common on pleated and cyst-rated media, means a tested percentage passes no larger particle. For general grit ahead of a softener a coarse nominal cartridge is the right tool, because it protects the equipment without choking flow. For polishing ahead of a membrane, a finer cartridge in a second housing does the delicate work while the coarse one takes the beating. Running one very fine cartridge on its own is the usual mistake: it blinds off in weeks and the house loses pressure.
Where a melt blown stage belongs in the line
Fit it after the pressure tank or the meter and before anything expensive. On a well it guards the softener resin bed and the pump check valve from sand. On city water it catches the rust and scale that a main break or a hydrant flush pushes into the house. It is also the stage that catches oxidized iron, the rust colored particles that form once dissolved iron meets air. Penn State Extension notes that iron and manganese carry secondary, aesthetic standards with recommended maximums of 0.3 mg/L for iron and 0.05 mg/L for manganese, and that oxidized iron fouls softener resin. A sediment cartridge captures those particles, but it will do nothing about the dissolved iron still in solution.
When to choose pleated or string wound instead
Pleated cartridges have far more surface area in the same housing, so they last longer on light silt and many of them can be rinsed off once or twice before they are discarded. String wound cartridges handle hot water and some solvents that melt blown polypropylene does not like. Melt blown wins on price and on heavy loading of mixed particle sizes, which describes most well water. Knowing when it is spent
A melt blown cartridge does not fail, it fills. The symptom is pressure loss, and the honest way to see it coming is a pressure gauge before and after the housing so you can watch the gap widen instead of guessing. Color is not a reliable guide, because a cartridge stained brown on the outside can still be perfectly open, while a pale one packed with fine clay can be nearly closed. Change it on pressure drop, or on a fixed interval if you have no gauges, and never wash and reuse one: the trapped load is held inside the wall and rinsing only drives it deeper.
Questions people ask about melt blown filters
Can a melt blown filter remove chlorine or bad taste?
No. It is a particle filter only. Chlorine, taste and odor need activated carbon, which is a separate cartridge or tank fitted after the sediment stage.
Does a melt blown filter remove bacteria?
No. Standard sediment cartridges are not rated for bacteria or viruses, and a loaded cartridge can host growth. Disinfection needs UV or chlorination.
Is a finer micron rating always better?
No. A finer cartridge blocks faster and costs pressure. Match the rating to the particles you actually have, and stage coarse before fine if you need both.
Can I use one on hot water?
Polypropylene melt blown cartridges are made for cold lines. For hot service, check the housing and cartridge temperature rating before fitting one.
