Tap filters all do the same basic thing, which is pass water through carbon before you drink it, but they differ enormously in how much media they hold and how long the water spends in it. That single factor decides how well a filter performs and how often you replace it.
The four formats and what each costs you
A pitcher lives in the fridge, needs no installation and refills manually, which is why households love it for a month and then stop filling it. A faucet-mounted unit screws to the spout and gives filtered water on demand, at the cost of a small cartridge and a diverter that eventually wears out. A countertop unit connects to the faucet with a hose and holds much more media, so it performs better and lasts longer while taking up counter space. An under-sink cartridge with a dedicated faucet is the tidiest and best-performing carbon option, and the only one needing tools.
What carbon can and cannot do
Carbon adsorbs chlorine, chloramine with the right formulation, taste and odor compounds and a wide range of organic chemicals, and better blocks are certified for lead reduction as well. It does nothing about dissolved minerals, which is the source of most confusion: filtered water is not softened water, it will still scale your kettle and spot your glasses, and it still contains whatever nitrate, sodium or fluoride the supply carried. It is also not a disinfectant, so on a well with a bacteriological problem a carbon tap filter is not a barrier. Those jobs belong to a softener, reverse osmosis and UV respectively.
Matching the filter to the actual complaint
If the complaint is chlorine taste, any of the four formats fixes it and you should buy on convenience. If the complaint is a lead service line or old solder, buy only a unit certified for lead reduction and fit it at the tap you drink from. If the complaint is a specific dissolved contaminant such as nitrate, arsenic or PFAS, no ordinary carbon tap filter is the answer and you need reverse osmosis or a certified specialist cartridge. If the complaint is scale and dry skin, no tap filter helps at all, because that is hardness and it needs treating for the whole house.
Certifications and the replacement habit
Read the performance data sheet rather than the packaging. Certification is claim by claim, so a unit certified for chlorine taste and odor has proven nothing about lead, and a unit that says it is tested to a standard is not the same as one certified against it. Then set a replacement habit, because the single biggest cause of a filter underperforming is a cartridge that is months past due. Which tap filter removes the most?
An under-sink cartridge holds the most media and gives the water the longest contact time, so it generally outperforms faucet-mounted and pitcher filters on the same claims.
Do tap filters remove fluoride?
Ordinary carbon filters do not. Fluoride is a dissolved ion, which means reverse osmosis or a specific adsorption media is needed rather than a standard tap cartridge.
Will a tap filter help with hard water?
No. Hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium and passes straight through carbon, so scale and spotting continue. Hardness needs a softener or conditioner treating the whole house.
How do I know when to change the cartridge?
Follow the maker's interval or gallon rating rather than waiting for taste to return, because taste is a late signal and a spent cartridge can release what it captured.
Are cheap and expensive cartridges the same inside?
