Pitcher filters are the cheapest honest way to improve drinking water: a small carbon cartridge in a jug that you fill by hand. They deal well with chlorine taste and, in certified versions, a specific list of contaminants. What they cannot do is treat a household, keep up with a family, or handle anything that needs contact time or a pressurized membrane.
What is inside, and what that implies
Almost every pitcher works the same way: gravity pulls water through a small bed of activated carbon, often mixed with an ion exchange resin, and out into the lower reservoir. That is a tiny amount of media with a short contact time, so the chemistry favors things carbon grabs quickly. Chlorine taste and odor go first and go completely. Anything that needs a long dwell time, a membrane, or a specialist media in quantity is being asked of the wrong device, however good the pitcher is.
Reading the claims instead of the marketing
Pitchers vary enormously in what they are certified to reduce, and two that look identical on a shelf can have completely different capability. The only thing worth reading is the performance data sheet, which lists each contaminant the cartridge is certified against. If lead is your reason for buying, buy a model certified for lead reduction specifically and replace the cartridge on time, because a spent cartridge is not a partly working one. Where no claim is listed for a contaminant, assume it is not addressed.
Where a pitcher stops making sense
A household drinking several liters a day will spend a lot of its life refilling and waiting. At that point a faucet-mounted or under-sink filter delivers the same chemistry on demand, and a countertop or under-sink reverse osmosis system covers dissolved contaminants a pitcher cannot touch, such as nitrate and most dissolved salts. A pitcher also does nothing for the shower, the washing machine or the water heater, so scale, iron staining and chlorine at the shower head remain untouched.
Living with one properly
Change the cartridge on the schedule printed on the box rather than when the water tastes odd, because taste tells you nothing about the odorless things. Keep the pitcher in the fridge and empty it if it sits unused for days, since a damp carbon bed at room temperature is a comfortable place for bacteria to grow. Questions people ask about pitcher filters
Do pitcher filters remove lead?
Only models specifically certified for lead reduction do, and only until the cartridge reaches its rated capacity. Check the performance data sheet rather than the box artwork.
Do pitcher filters soften water?
No. Some contain a resin that reduces a little hardness at the drinking tap, but nothing about a pitcher protects your plumbing, water heater or appliances from scale.
Can a pitcher filter make well water safe?
It should not be relied on for that. A pitcher is not a disinfection device and does not address bacteria, nitrate or arsenic, all of which need a test and a treatment step sized for the supply.
How often should the cartridge be replaced?
Follow the rated capacity in gallons or the calendar interval the manufacturer gives, whichever comes first. A carbon bed gives no warning when its surface is full.
