Start with your utility's report
The EPA requires every community water system to publish an annual Consumer Confidence Report and maintains a finder for them. Reading yours takes ten minutes and tells you what the utility detected, which disinfectant it uses and where it sits against the standards. That turns filter shopping from guesswork into matching: chlorine and taste complaints point to carbon, dissolved solids point to reverse osmosis, and anything the report does not cover, such as what your own plumbing adds, points to a tap sample from your kitchen.
Pitchers and faucet-mounted units
A filter pitcher needs nothing installed and handles chlorine taste and odor well, at the cost of refilling it constantly and a small cartridge that exhausts quickly. A faucet-mounted filter screws onto the aerator thread and gives filtered water on demand with a bypass lever for washing up, though it will not fit a pull-down sprayer and it slows the flow. Both are good renter answers and both should be chosen against the specific certified claims of the model, not the format in general.
Under-sink filtration
Under the sink you have room for a cartridge several times the size of a pitcher filter, which means longer contact time, broader certified claims and far fewer changes. A carbon block on its own faucet handles taste, odor and, in certified models, contaminants such as lead. Reverse osmosis goes further, rejecting dissolved solids that carbon cannot touch, at the cost of a drain connection, a storage tank and slower production. Both need a spare faucet hole or a drilled countertop.
Whole house, and when it is the right answer
A point-of-entry filter treats every tap, shower and appliance, which matters when the problem is sediment, chlorine you can smell in the shower, or well water that needs iron or sulfur treatment. It does not replace a drinking water filter, because contact time at whole-house flow rates is short and because plumbing downstream can add to the water again.
