PP melt blown filter cartridge: how it is made and what it catches

A pp melt blown filter cartridge is a sediment filter made from polypropylene fibers blown into a dense cylinder while molten, bonded together without glue or binders. It is the most common sediment cartridge in household water treatment because it is cheap, chemically inert and holds dirt through its whole thickness rather than only at the surface.

Depth filtration, and why it holds more dirt

The manufacturing process lays down fibers in graded layers, coarse on the outside and progressively finer toward the core. Water travels inward through that gradient, so large particles are caught in the outer layers and finer ones deeper in. That is depth filtration, and its advantage is capacity: the whole wall of the cartridge stores sediment rather than just the outer face. A surface filter blinds as soon as its face is covered, while a depth cartridge keeps working as the load builds, which is why melt blown cartridges suit water carrying a mixed range of particle sizes.

Polypropylene, and why the material matters

Polypropylene is chemically inert, does not shed fibers into the water in normal service, tolerates a broad pH range and adds no taste or odor. It is also thermally bonded rather than glued, so there is no binder to leach out, which is why melt blown cartridges are the default for potable water and for pre-filtration ahead of reverse osmosis membranes. The material has limits: it is a cold water product in typical household housings and it is not a carbon filter, so it removes particles and does nothing about chlorine, taste or dissolved contaminants.

Micron rating, nominal and absolute

The rating describes the particle size a cartridge captures, and it comes in two flavors that are frequently confused. A nominal rating means the cartridge captures most particles of that size, which is normal and sufficient for sediment duty. An absolute rating is a much stricter claim about capture at that size, and it is what matters when a cartridge is protecting something delicate downstream. Choosing too fine a rating for dirty water is a common mistake: it clogs quickly, drops pressure across the house and gets replaced far too often, which is why staged filtration exists.

Staging coarse to fine

The efficient arrangement on water with a heavy sediment load is two housings in series, a coarser cartridge first and a finer one behind it. The first takes the bulk of the material and is cheap to replace, while the second polishes and lasts far longer because it is no longer being asked to do everything. When to change it

Melt blown cartridges do not degrade chemically: they fill up. The reliable indicator is pressure difference, so fit gauges before and after the housing and change when the gap between them grows beyond the normal working range. Color is a poor guide, since a cartridge can look filthy while still flowing freely, or look pale while packed with fine silt. Do not try to wash and reuse one, because rinsing dislodges captured material back into the depth of the media and permanently damages the graded structure that made it work.

Can a melt blown cartridge be cleaned and reused?

No. Rinsing pushes trapped particles deeper into the fiber matrix and breaks down the graded density that makes depth filtration work, so a washed cartridge performs worse and clogs faster than a new one.

What is the difference between melt blown and string wound cartridges?

Both are depth filters. Melt blown uses thermally bonded fibers in a graded density, giving finer, more consistent ratings, while string wound uses yarn wrapped around a core and generally suits coarser duty with high dirt capacity.

Does a melt blown filter remove chlorine or bacteria?

No. It is a sediment cartridge that removes particles only. Chlorine needs activated carbon, and bacteria need disinfection such as ultraviolet treatment or chlorination, neither of which a polypropylene filter provides.

Should I choose the finest rating available?
