Choosing a water filter for iron well water

Iron is the most common well water complaint in much of the country, and the treatment that works depends entirely on the form the iron arrives in. Water that is clear at the tap and turns orange in the bucket is carrying dissolved iron. Water that is already orange as it leaves the tap is carrying oxidized particles. Those two need different equipment, and using the wrong one is the usual reason a system disappoints.

Establish the form with a bucket and an hour

Draw a clear glass and watch it. Clear at first, then developing a rusty cast and a settling sediment as it stands, means dissolved ferrous iron meeting air and oxidizing. Orange or red from the moment it leaves the tap means the iron has already oxidized underground or in the plumbing and is arriving as particles. A slimy reddish film in the toilet cistern or on fixtures, rather than gritty deposits, points at iron bacteria, which is a third case again and needs disinfection alongside filtration rather than filtration alone.

Where a softener is enough

Penn State Extension notes that softeners can remove dissolved iron when pH is above 6.7, hardness is 3 to 20 grains per gallon and dissolved iron is under 5 mg/L, and that oxidized iron fouls resin. That is a genuinely useful boundary. On a well that is hard and carries a modest dissolved iron load, one softener handles both problems and there is no need for a separate iron filter. Outside those conditions the resin is being asked to do a job it will lose, and the fouling shows up as a softener that stops softening months later.

Oxidizing filters for heavier loads

Above the softener's range, the standard approach is to oxidize the iron deliberately and then filter the particles out. Air injection systems draw a pocket of air into the top of the vessel and the water passes through it before reaching a catalytic media bed. Chemical feed systems dose an oxidant ahead of a retention tank and filter. Manganese greensand and similar media both oxidize and filter, regenerated on a schedule. Sizing follows the iron load and the flow rate, and the backwash flow the vessel needs is the number most often missed.

Ordering the stages, and the maintenance

Iron treatment goes ahead of the softener, so oxidized particles never reach the resin, and ahead of any ultraviolet lamp, since iron films the quartz sleeve. Sediment filtration goes first of all where the well also carries grit. Penn State notes iron and manganese carry secondary, aesthetic standards with recommended maximums of 0.3 mg/L iron and 0.05 mg/L manganese, which is what a laboratory result is measured against.
