Iron filter water softener: how the two work together

An iron filter and a water softener are two different machines doing two different jobs, and on iron-bearing well water you often need both. The iron filter oxidizes and removes iron and manganese; the softener exchanges hardness minerals. Put them in the wrong order and the softener pays for it.

Iron filter first, always

The oxidizing filter goes ahead of the softener so the resin never meets iron in particle form. Penn State Extension notes that softeners can remove dissolved iron in the right conditions, with pH above 6.7, hardness between 3 and 20 grains per gallon and dissolved iron under 5 mg/L, but that oxidized iron fouls resin. Once the bed is fouled, capacity falls, water starts smelling metallic, and you are into resin cleaner or a rebed. Order of installation is not a preference here, it is protection.

When one machine will do

If a laboratory test shows modest dissolved iron and the water is otherwise within the conditions above, a softener alone can carry it and many homes run that way for years. If iron is high, if it arrives already oxidized as orange particles, or if manganese and sulfur odor are present, the softener will not cope and a dedicated iron filter is the right purchase. Iron and manganese carry secondary aesthetic standards, with recommended maximums of 0.3 mg/L iron and 0.05 mg/L manganese, so your test result decides this, not a guess.

How the pair is installed and serviced

Both are tank systems needing a drain connection for backwash and regeneration, and both need to be scheduled so they do not backwash at the same hour and starve each other of flow. Leave clearance around each head for service, fit isolation valves and a bypass on both, and run the drain lines with an air gap. Expect the iron filter to consume its own maintenance, whether that is air injection checks or media replacement, on top of the softener's salt.

Sizing them as a system

Size the iron filter on the measured iron and manganese and on the household peak flow, since a filter passing more than its rated flow simply lets iron through to the softener you were protecting. Size the softener on hardness and daily usage after the iron filter, not before. Does an iron filter go before or after a water softener?

Before. The softener resin must never see oxidized iron, which fouls the bed and costs you capacity, so the iron filter treats the water first.

Can one system do both iron removal and softening?

Combination units exist and suit modest iron levels, but on heavy iron or with manganese and sulfur present, separate machines perform far better.

Do I need an iron filter if my water is not orange?

Possibly. Dissolved iron is clear at the tap and only turns orange once it oxidizes, so a laboratory test is the only reliable check.
