The limit is not the cartridge's quality: it is that most iron in well water arrives dissolved and invisible, and a cartridge can only catch what is already a particle.
The form decides everything
Draw a clear glass and let it stand. Water that is clear at first and develops a rusty cast with settling sediment is carrying dissolved ferrous iron, which passes straight through a cartridge because there is nothing to strain. Water that is orange the moment it leaves the tap is carrying particles that have already oxidized, and those a cartridge can catch. Establishing which you have takes an hour and decides whether a cartridge is even relevant.
Where a cartridge genuinely works
On oxidized iron at a modest load: a depth sediment cartridge catches the particles, and specialist iron reduction cartridges add media that helps. It also works as a polishing stage behind an oxidizing filter or a chlorination system, catching what those stages have converted. And on a municipal supply where the occasional rusty water event follows mains work, a cartridge handles it comfortably because the load is temporary rather than continuous.
Where it does not
On dissolved iron of any consequence, because the cartridge is not the mechanism. On a continuous heavy load, where even oxidized iron blocks a cartridge in days and the household ends up changing filters weekly. And where iron bacteria are present, since they form slime that fouls cartridges rapidly and regrow regardless, needing disinfection rather than filtration. In all three the answer is a backwashing media vessel that oxidizes and filters, or chlorination followed by a filter.
Reading the numbers before buying
Penn State Extension notes iron and manganese carry secondary aesthetic standards with recommended maximums of 0.3 mg/L for iron and 0.05 mg/L for manganese, and that softeners handle dissolved iron only when pH is above 6.7, hardness is 3 to 20 grains per gallon and dissolved iron is under 5 mg/L.
