Iron water treatment: matching the method to the form of iron

Iron water treatment fails when the equipment is chosen before the iron is identified. The same orange staining can come from dissolved ferrous iron, already-oxidized ferric iron, iron bacteria or iron bound up with organic matter, and each of those is removed by a different mechanism. A simple observation at the tap tells you most of what you need.

Tell the forms apart at the tap

Draw a glass of cold water and watch it. If it comes out clear and turns orange over several minutes as it stands, the iron was dissolved ferrous iron reacting with air. If it is already orange and cloudy at the tap, with particles that settle out, it is ferric iron that oxidized somewhere upstream. A reddish or grey slimy film in the toilet tank, on fixtures or inside pipes, sometimes with an oily sheen and a musty smell, indicates iron bacteria. Water with a yellow to brown tea color that does not clear on standing suggests iron bound to organic matter, which is the most difficult case.

The thresholds that decide the equipment

Iron and manganese carry secondary standards, meaning they are regulated for aesthetics rather than health, with recommended maximums of 0.3 mg/L for iron and 0.05 mg/L for manganese. Penn State Extension notes that a water softener can remove dissolved iron when pH is above 6.7, hardness falls between 3 and 20 grains per gallon, and dissolved iron is under 5 mg/L. Above those limits, or where the iron is already oxidized, the softener is the wrong tool: oxidized iron fouls the resin, coats the bed and progressively destroys both the softening and the iron removal capacity.

Oxidizing filters for the higher concentrations

The mainstream answer for a well with real iron is an oxidizing filter: the dissolved iron is converted to a solid particle and then filtered out, all inside one backwashing vessel. Air injection systems maintain a pocket of air at the top of the tank and pull water through it. Catalytic media beds promote the reaction on the media surface. Chemical feed systems inject an oxidant ahead of the filter for the heaviest loads or where sulfur is present as well. All of them backwash, which means a drain line and a backwash flow rate the well pump can deliver without losing pressure to the house.

Iron bacteria and organic iron need something else

Iron bacteria are not removed by filtration, because the problem is a living colony in the well and the plumbing. The treatment is shock chlorination of the well followed by a retest, and where it recurs, continuous chlorination with a contact tank and a filter behind it. Organically bound iron resists conventional oxidation because the organic matter shields it, and it usually needs strong oxidation with retention time, sometimes combined with an organic scavenger resin.
