A softener will remove iron, but only the dissolved kind, and only while the water sits inside a fairly narrow window. Penn State Extension puts that window at a pH above 6.7, hardness of 3 to 20 grains per gallon and dissolved iron under 5 mg/L. Outside those conditions, or where the iron has already turned to rust, a softener is the wrong machine and will foul.
Dissolved iron versus oxidized iron
Draw a glass from the tap. If it is clear when poured and only turns orange after standing for a while, the iron is dissolved, and ion exchange resin can hold onto it in the same way it holds calcium and magnesium. If the water is orange or has visible specks the moment it leaves the faucet, the iron is already oxidized. Penn State Extension is direct about that case: oxidized iron fouls resin, coating the beads so they stop exchanging and the softener slowly stops softening as well.
What the numbers on your test report have to say
Penn State Extension treats iron and manganese as secondary, aesthetic contaminants, with recommended maximums of 0.3 mg/L iron and 0.05 mg/L manganese. Those are staining and taste thresholds rather than health limits. The practical reading is simple: a trace of dissolved iron just over the recommended maximum can ride along on a softener, while a well running several times that figure needs dedicated iron treatment ahead of the softener, not instead of it.
What to install when the softener cannot cope
The usual answer for a well is an oxidizing filter placed before the softener: air injection, or chemical feed followed by a media bed, which converts the dissolved iron to particles and then traps them. The softener then handles hardness only and lives far longer. Where iron is low but persistent, some owners add an iron-specific resin cleaner to the brine cycle, which slows fouling but never reverses a bed that is already caked.
Test before you buy either machine
Iron treatment is chosen on pH, hardness, dissolved iron, manganese and whether iron bacteria are present, and none of that can be judged by eye. A lab test on a fresh sample gives all of it at once, and iron in particular has to be sampled and preserved properly because it changes in the bottle.
