A softener can remove iron, but only dissolved iron and only inside a fairly narrow window of water conditions. Push past that window and the resin fouls, capacity collapses, and you end up replacing a bed that should have lasted years. Knowing which kind of iron you have is what decides whether a softener is the right machine at all.
Dissolved iron versus oxidized iron
Dissolved iron, sometimes called clear water iron, is invisible when you draw the glass and turns orange as it stands. Oxidized iron, or red water iron, is already particulate when it leaves the tap and looks rusty immediately. Penn State Extension is direct on the consequence: oxidized iron fouls resin. Ion exchange only works on the dissolved form, because the particulate form does not exchange, it simply lodges in the bed and coats it.
The conditions that make it workable
Penn State Extension gives the working window plainly: softeners can remove dissolved iron when pH is above 6.7, hardness is between 3 and 20 grains per gallon, and dissolved iron is under 5 mg/L. Read that as three conditions, not one. Water below that pH, water that is barely hard, and water carrying more iron than the limit all take the softener outside what it can do reliably, whatever the sales page says.
Why iron carries only an aesthetic standard
Iron and manganese carry secondary standards, which are aesthetic rather than health based, with recommended maximums of 0.3 mg/L for iron and 0.05 mg/L for manganese. That is why nobody is compelled to treat them and why the decision is yours: the complaints are staining on fixtures and laundry, a metallic taste, and dark residue in a toilet cistern. Manganese is harder on a softener than iron and shows up as brown to black staining.
When to fit a dedicated iron filter instead
If your iron is above the softener window, if any of it arrives already oxidized, or if there is iron bacteria producing slime in the tank, buy an iron filter and put it ahead of the softener. Air injection oxidizing filters and manganese greensand are the usual choices.
