Partly, and only within limits. A softener's resin will exchange dissolved iron along with calcium and magnesium, so modest iron does disappear from the water. Push past what the resin can handle, or send it iron that has already oxidized, and the bed fouls, capacity falls and you have created an expensive problem.
The conditions that decide it
Penn State Extension sets out where a softener can take iron on: pH above 6.7, hardness between 3 and 20 grains per gallon, and dissolved iron under 5 mg/L. Inside that window the resin does the job. Outside it, the softener is the wrong machine. The same source notes that iron and manganese carry secondary aesthetic standards, with recommended maximums of 0.3 mg/L for iron and 0.05 mg/L for manganese, so you need a laboratory number for both before you can judge your own case.
Dissolved iron versus oxidized iron
Iron arrives in two forms and only one of them is a softener's business. Dissolved ferrous iron is clear in the glass and turns orange as it stands. Oxidized ferric iron is already a rust particle when it reaches you. Penn State notes plainly that oxidized iron fouls resin: the particles coat the beads, block exchange sites and cut the softener's capacity. If your water is orange straight from the tap, do not send it through a softener, filter it first.
Signs the softener is losing the fight
Hard water breaking through before the next regeneration, a metallic taste, staining that returns, or a rusty tint in the brine tank all suggest iron is accumulating in the bed. Some of it can be reversed with a resin cleaner used on a regular schedule, and many owners with mild iron do exactly that as routine maintenance. If cleaning stops working, the resin is fouled beyond recovery and a rebed or a new unit is next, which is why the iron filter question is worth answering early.
What to buy instead when it is over the line
An oxidizing iron filter using air injection or a manganese-dioxide media bed goes ahead of the softener, converts iron and manganese to particles and backwashes them away. That leaves the softener to do hardness only, which is what it is good at. Test first: the split between one machine and two is decided by a number, not a symptom.
