Orange stains in the tub, metallic taste, brown laundry: iron is the classic private-well complaint, and it is an aesthetic problem before a health one. Penn State Extension notes that iron and manganese carry secondary, recommended standards rather than health limits, with drinking water recommended to hold no more than 0.3 mg/L of iron and less than 0.05 mg/L of manganese. Removal is well understood; what decides the method is your measured numbers and which form the iron takes, so the test comes first and the equipment follows it.
Start with the numbers and the form
A lab test tells you the iron and manganese concentrations, the pH, and the hardness, and those four numbers select the treatment. Form matters as much as amount: dissolved (clear-water) iron comes out of the tap invisible and stains later as it oxidizes, while already-oxidized (red-water) iron arrives as visible particles. The distinction is not academic, because the two forms are removed by different equipment, and treating the wrong form wears out the wrong device. Water that pours clear and stains overnight is dissolved iron; water that arrives tinted is oxidized, and many wells deliver some of each.
What a softener can and cannot carry
A conventional water softener removes dissolved iron by the same ion exchange that removes hardness, and Penn State Extension puts working limits on that: it is an option when pH is above 6.7, hardness is in the 3 to 20 grains per gallon range, and dissolved iron is under about 5 mg/L. The same source is blunt about the failure mode: oxidized iron fouls softener resin, so raw water must not meet air or chlorine before the softener, and using a resin bed as a mechanical filter for oxidized iron is not recommended. In practice that makes the softener a legitimate answer for modest clear-water iron on hard well water, and the wrong tool for anything visibly orange.
