Manganese in well water is the quieter twin of iron. It shows up as black or dark brown staining in toilets, dishwashers and laundry, as a bitter metallic taste, and as dark specks that appear after water has stood. Penn State Extension notes that manganese carries a secondary, aesthetic standard with a recommended maximum of 0.05 mg/L, well below the 0.3 mg/L recommended for iron.
How manganese announces itself
The staining is the giveaway. Iron leaves orange and rust-red marks, manganese leaves black, brown or purplish-black ones, and most wells that have one also have the other, so you often see both. Look inside the toilet tank and the dishwasher, at laundry that has come out grayer than it went in, and at the inside of the kettle. Water drawn fresh may run clear and then darken in the glass as dissolved manganese meets air and oxidizes. Slimy black deposits in the tank or in the plumbing usually mean manganese bacteria, a different nuisance that survives simple filtration.
Why manganese is harder to remove than iron
Both metals are treated the same way in principle: oxidize the dissolved form into a particle, then filter the particle out. Manganese simply resists that first step. It oxidizes far more slowly than iron and needs a higher pH before it will convert at a useful rate, which is why a system that clears the orange staining can leave the black staining untouched. That is also why acidic well water is often corrected with a soda ash feed or a calcite neutralizer before the oxidation stage, and why manganese removal fails so often when it is bolted onto an iron filter without checking pH.
Treatment options, ordered by your water chemistry
On water in the right window, a softener will take dissolved manganese out along with hardness, since it behaves as a positively charged ion on the resin. Penn State Extension sets that window for iron at a pH above 6.7, hardness of 3 to 20 grains per gallon and dissolved iron under 5 mg/L, and adds that oxidized iron fouls resin, which is the same trap manganese sets. Above that window, the standard answer is a catalytic or greensand-type media filter, often with an oxidizer such as air, chlorine or peroxide injected ahead of it. Heavy manganese with bacteria usually needs continuous chlorination plus filtration.
Test before you buy anything
Manganese treatment is one of the areas where guessing is expensive, because the media, the oxidizer and the need for pH correction all follow from numbers you cannot see. Order a panel that reports manganese, iron, pH, hardness, hydrogen sulfide and bacteria together, and ask for the sample to be collected the way the lab specifies, since dissolved metals oxidize in a bottle left standing.
