Identify the form before you shop

Fill a clear glass and look at it immediately, then again after it has stood for an hour. Water that is clear at first and turns orange as it sits carries dissolved ferrous iron, which is what most wells have. Water that is orange straight from the tap already carries oxidized ferric particles, which are filterable but will blind a fine cartridge quickly. Reddish slime or a rainbow sheen in the toilet cistern points to iron bacteria, which no plain filter fixes and which usually needs shock chlorination first. Oxidizing filters are the workhorse

The critical warning is that oxidized iron fouls resin: if the water arrives already orange, the particles coat the beads, the softener loses capacity and no amount of salt brings it back. Iron out resin cleaners slow that down but do not substitute for a filter ahead of it.

Iron and manganese are aesthetic standards, not health limits

Both iron and manganese carry secondary standards, meaning they are set for staining, taste and appearance rather than for health effects. Penn State Extension gives recommended maximums of 0.3 mg/L for iron and 0.05 mg/L for manganese, and most households notice the problem well before a lab confirms it: orange staining in the tub, dark specks in the laundry, a metallic taste in coffee. Manganese stains black rather than orange and is harder to remove, so a water report showing both usually points toward a catalytic media filter rather than relying on the softener.

Building the train in the right order

Sediment first if the well pumps sand, then the iron treatment, then the softener, then any carbon for taste. That order matters because each stage protects the next: putting the softener ahead of the iron filter is the mistake that ruins resin. Size the iron filter for peak household flow, since backwashing media need a minimum flow rate to lift and clean the bed properly, and an undersized drain line will starve the backwash. Manufacturers publish flow ratings and tank sizes for exactly this reason. Retest after installation to confirm you fixed what you paid to fix.

Will a sediment cartridge remove iron from well water?
