Quick connect fittings are the push in connectors used throughout filtration systems, particularly under sinks and in reverse osmosis installations. They hold on small diameter tubing without tools and without sealant, and when they leak it is almost always because of something done to the tube rather than a fault in the fitting.
How they grip and seal
Two components do separate jobs. A stainless collet with angled teeth bites into the outside of the tube and resists it being pulled out, gripping harder as the tube is pulled. Behind it an O ring seals against the tube's outer surface. That is the important detail: the seal is made on the outside wall of the tubing, so anything that damages, scores or distorts that surface causes a leak that no amount of pushing further in will cure.
Cutting the tube properly
This is where nearly all leaks originate. The cut must be square and clean, made with a proper tube cutter rather than scissors, side cutters or a knife, all of which crush the tube oval or leave a ragged edge. An oval tube cannot seal against a round O ring. Cut back past any section that has been crushed, kinked or scratched rather than reusing it. Deburr lightly if needed, and keep the last inch of the tube clean, since grit dragged in under the O ring scores the seal.
Making the connection
Push the tube in firmly until it stops, then keep pushing, because there is a second stage past the collet where it seats against the internal shoulder, and a tube stopped at the collet holds under no pressure and blows out under it. Mark the tube with a pen at the fitting face before pushing so you can see whether it has moved. Then pull back gently to confirm the collet has gripped. Check the joint again an hour later, since push fittings often weep only after pressure settles.
Releasing and reusing them
To release, depressurize the system first, then push the collet squarely towards the fitting body while pulling the tube out. Pulling without pressing the collet damages the tube surface and guarantees a leak next time. Fittings can generally be reused; the tube end usually cannot, so cut back and use fresh tube.
