What hard water is, and what the resin tank does about it

Hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium, and the USGS classifies it on a scale of milligrams per liter as calcium carbonate: soft is 0 to 60 mg/L, moderately hard 61 to 120, hard 121 to 180, and very hard above 180 mg/L. Inside the resin tank, water passes through a bed of resin beads charged with sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium stick to the beads and sodium is released in their place, so the water leaving the tank no longer forms scale on heater elements, fixtures and glassware. The resin has a finite capacity, which is why the other two parts exist.

The brine tank and the regeneration cycle

When the resin fills up with hardness minerals, the control valve draws salty water from the brine tank backwards through the resin bed. The concentrated sodium knocks the calcium and magnesium off the beads and carries them down the drain, leaving the resin recharged. This regeneration typically runs in the small hours when nobody is drawing water. Your only ongoing job is keeping salt in the brine tank and occasionally checking that it has not bridged into a hollow crust, which leaves the system running on nothing while looking full.

The valve is the brain and the biggest quality difference between systems: metered demand valves count actual water use and regenerate only when needed, while old timer valves regenerate on the calendar whether the resin is spent or not. Will a softener also filter my water?
