Calcite is crushed and screened calcium carbonate, the same mineral as limestone, and in water treatment it does one job: it dissolves slowly into acidic water and raises the pH. It is the media inside almost every neutralizer tank on a private well, and it is consumed as it works.
How the media raises pH
Calcium carbonate is only slightly soluble in neutral water but dissolves readily in acidic water. Send low-pH well water down through a bed of calcite and the acidity is consumed by dissolving the mineral, so the water leaves the tank closer to neutral. The reaction is self-limiting, which is the property that makes calcite forgiving: once the water is no longer acidic it stops dissolving much media, so a correctly sized bed will not push the pH far past neutral no matter how long the water sits in it. That is the difference between calcite and a chemical feed, which will happily overshoot if the pump is set wrong.
Grades, blends and contact time
Calcite is sold in grades by particle size. Finer grades dissolve faster and give more surface area, but they also pack tighter and cause more pressure drop, and they wash out more readily during backwash. Coarser grades flow better and last longer per pound but react more slowly. Where water is strongly acidic, calcite alone often cannot lift the pH far enough, so it is blended with magnesium oxide, which is far more reactive. The blend ratio has to be chosen with care because too much magnesium oxide will overshoot. Either way the tank must be sized for enough contact time at the household's peak flow rate.
The hardness trade-off
There is no way around this: raising pH with calcite works by putting calcium into the water, and hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium. A house that had soft, aggressive well water will have moderately hard water after the neutralizer, and the more acidic the raw water, the more hardness gets added. Households that care about scale and lather put a softener downstream to remove the added hardness. Households that only wanted to stop the blue-green staining and the pinhole leaks in copper often accept the new hardness. Decide which you are before you buy, because it changes the size of the project.
Topping up and keeping the bed working
Because the media is used up rather than exhausted, calcite tanks need refilling rather than regenerating. Most households add media once or twice a year, and the sign that it is due is the pH creeping back down at the tap or the visible bed level dropping when you open the tank. The control valve backwashes the bed periodically to lift it, re-level it and stop the fines compacting into a channel, so a neutralizer needs a drain connection like any backwashing filter.
