Sizing a calcite neutralizer filter for an acidic supply

A calcite neutralizer looks like any other media vessel and is sized by a different logic, because it works by dissolving rather than by filtering. What it needs is contact time, and contact time comes from bed depth at a given flow rate. Get that balance wrong and the pH lift falls short no matter how much media is in the tank.

Bed depth is what does the work

Water has to be in contact with the calcite long enough to dissolve some of it, so the depth of media the water passes through, at the rate it is passing, determines how far pH rises. A shallow bed in a wide tank holds plenty of media and gives poor contact; a deeper bed in a narrower tank gives better contact at the same volume. That is why neutralizers tend to be taller and narrower than a sediment vessel of similar capacity, and why an inline cartridge achieves so little.

Diameter has to carry the flow

Against that, the vessel must pass the household's peak simultaneous draw without pushing water through so fast that contact collapses, and it must be a diameter whose backwash flow the well can actually sustain. Those pull in opposite directions: deeper and narrower is better for contact, wider is better for flow and worse for backwash. Sizing is the balance between them, worked from measured pH and alkalinity, the household's peak draw, and the pump's sustained output.

Backwash, and what happens without it

Calcite dissolves as it works, and if the bed is left undisturbed it cements into a solid mass. Backwash lifts and re-sorts it, and also clears any sediment caught. A vessel that is not backwashing properly, usually because the flow control does not match what the well delivers, develops channels: water finds a path through, contact time collapses, and the pH correction quietly disappears while the vessel appears to be running its cycles normally. Nothing reports this.

Topping up, and the consequences to plan for

Because the media is consumed rather than exhausted, the bed level falls and is topped up, typically about once a year depending on acidity and use. Correction also adds hardness, which matters where the water is already hard or a softener sits downstream and will see a heavier load. And calcite's lift is limited, so strongly acidic water needs blended media or a soda ash injection system.
