Dissolving, not filtering
Acidic water dissolves calcium carbonate on contact, which raises pH and adds calcium to the water. There is no straining involved, so nothing accumulates and the media does not block: it simply gets smaller. The rate depends on how acidic the water is and how long it is in contact with the media, which is why bed depth and flow rate matter far more than any rating. It also means the bed level drops over time and has to be topped up, typically about once a year.
Why the tank format works
A backwashing vessel holds enough media to give real contact time at household flow, and its control valve periodically lifts and rinses the bed. That backwash does two jobs: it clears sediment, and it prevents calcite cementing into a solid mass as it dissolves, which it will do if left undisturbed. A neutralizer that has stopped backwashing develops channels, water finds a path through, contact collapses, and pH correction quietly falls away while the vessel looks fine from outside.
Why small cartridges usually disappoint
An inline calcite cartridge holds a fraction of the media and sees the full flow of whatever line it is on, so contact time is short and the pH lift is correspondingly small. On a mildly acidic point of use application it may be adequate; on a whole house supply from an acidic well it is not, and the household concludes calcite does not work when the real problem is quantity. There is also nothing to keep the media from packing, since a cartridge does not backwash.
The consequences to plan for
Calcite adds hardness as it raises pH, which is usually welcome on very soft aggressive water and matters where the water is already hard or a softener sits downstream and will see a heavier load. Its lift is limited, so strongly acidic water may need blended media or a soda ash injection system instead.
