It is the standard fix for the blue green staining and pinhole leaks that acidic well water causes in copper plumbing. The media is consumed as it works, so the tank needs topping up rather than merely backwashing.
The problem calcite is solving
Water on the acidic side of neutral is aggressive toward metal. In a house with copper pipe that shows up as blue green staining in sinks, tubs and toilet tanks, a metallic taste, corroded fittings and eventually pinhole leaks in the pipe itself. Where galvanized pipe or brass fittings are involved the leaching is different but the mechanism is the same. Acidic supplies are common on private wells in areas with granite bedrock, sandy soils or heavy rainfall, where the groundwater has no limestone to pass through and pick up alkalinity from. City systems adjust pH at the plant, so this is overwhelmingly a well owner's problem.
How a neutralizer tank works
The media sits in a tank with a control valve on top, plumbed into the main line usually right after the pressure tank. Acidic water percolates down through the bed, dissolving a small amount of the calcium carbonate as it goes, which raises the pH and adds alkalinity that buffers the water against swinging acidic again. The valve backwashes the bed periodically, lifting and rinsing it to prevent the media cementing into a solid block and to flush out fines. Where the water is very aggressive, a blend of calcite with a magnesium oxide media is used, since that dissolves faster and lifts pH further, though it needs care not to overshoot.
The trade you are making
Because the media works by dissolving, two things follow. The bed is consumed and must be topped up, typically once or twice a year depending on how acidic and how heavy the household draw is, and the tank has to be opened to do it. And every bit that dissolves adds calcium to the water, so a neutralizer makes the supply harder than it was. Houses that had no hardness problem before can develop one, which is why a neutralizer and a softener are so often installed together, with the neutralizer first so the softener sees the corrected water. Budget for that consequence at quote time rather than discovering it after the fact.
Sizing, upkeep and what it does not fix
Sizing follows two figures: how acidic the water is, which sets how much contact time the bed needs, and peak household flow, which sets the tank diameter. Undersized tanks raise pH only partway and the staining continues. Maintenance is topping the media, watching that the backwash cycle still lifts the bed, and retesting pH once or twice a year. Understand the limits: calcite corrects acidity and nothing else.
