Fitting a calcite filter for well water that is corroding pipes

A calcite filter is a backwashing tank of crushed calcium carbonate that acidic well water dissolves as it passes, consuming acidity and raising the pH towards neutral. It is the standard first response to a well that is eating copper pipework, and its position in the treatment train matters as much as the tank itself.

The problem it addresses

Acidic water is aggressive to metal and it advertises itself before anyone measures it. Blue green staining in sinks, baths and cisterns is dissolved copper from your own pipework. Repeated pinhole leaks in copper lines are the same process finishing. A metallic taste and corroded fittings on a heater point the same way. The EPA notes private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so the staining is often the first notice an owner gets that pH is low.

How the media behaves

Calcite dissolves in acidic water and largely stops as the water approaches neutral, which makes it hard to overshoot and easy to live with. That self limiting behavior is its main virtue. Its main limitation is speed: on very acidic water calcite alone works too slowly to lift the pH within the contact time available, and magnesium oxide media is blended in, which is far more aggressive and overshoots easily if the ratio is wrong. The blend is set by the test result, not by habit.

Where it goes and what it changes

Early in the train, ahead of iron treatment, because iron and manganese oxidation depends on pH and an oxidizing filter on acidic water underperforms until the pH is corrected. Then ahead of a softener, which must be sized for the hardness the calcite adds rather than the original figure, since dissolving calcium carbonate into water is by definition adding hardness. On water that was already hard, expect noticeably more scale unless a softener follows.

Sizing, backwash and upkeep

Contact time governs the result, so the tank is sized to household peak flow rather than to available space, and an undersized bed lifts pH barely at all. The control head backwashes periodically to lift and reclassify the media so it does not cement and channel, and that needs both a flow rate the well can deliver and a drain.
